I guess it’s to expensive to hire personal bodyguards for events. I’m glad Rushdie is back working. He’s very lucky to be alive after the knife attack.
Salman has published a memoir of the attack:

And here’s a nice interview with the man Rushdie credits with saving his life.
Man accused of stabbing Salman Rushdie rejects plea deal involving terrorism charge
The agreement would have had Matar plead guilty in Chautauqua County to attempted murder in exchange for a maximum state prison sentence of 20 years, down from 25 years. It would have also required him to plead guilty to a federal charge of attempting to provide material support to a designated terrorist organization, which could result in an additional 20 years, attorneys said.

Jury convicts man who stabbed Rushdie: attempted murder, facing a sentence of up to 25 years.
Defence argued that there was no evidence of intent to kill. DA countered that stabbing someone several times in the face and neck shows intent. Jury obviously agreed.
Trial on federal terrorism charges is pending.
The defense had to try, I guess, but I’d be ashamed if that was literally the best argument I had. It’s trying to deny the fundamental basis of the charge being tried. It’s damn close to the “ha ha only joking” defense.
Still better than the twinkie defense.
Rushdie’s “Knife" was a very interesting read; would recommend it. I was never big on his magical realism stuff though.
