One result of my low-salt diet was that my blood potassium rose too high and I had to omit high potassium foods, like bananas. And no, I never ever used a salt substitute.
Yesterday I bought a salt substitute, which is potassium chloride (“Nu-Salt”). I tasted a few grains right out of the shaker and they tasted about 75% like salt, so this morning I sprinkled some on my poached egg. Bleh. It tastes like sulfur that has ambitions to be salt but has a long way to go.
I also bought some Dash, some low-sodium soy sauce, and some no-salt chicken broth powder in packets. And some no-salt pretzels and rice cakes. Rice cakes with unsalted butter and jam and a chicken thigh poached with no salt formed my lunch yesterday.
I’m trying this low-salt thing for two months, and if during that time I have another episode of tinnitus, hyperacusis, pressure, and vertigo, then screw it. Another Doper here has Meniere’s and has stated that he did low salt but it didn’t help a bit. If it doesn’t help me, at the end of the two-month trial, I’m going out for Thai food.
Wars have been fought over salt. I mean, literally 5 or 6 wars have been called or nicknamed “salt war.”
