…but Corona is the beer Mexicans consume the most. They’re not snooty about it like some folks
I drink entirely too much beer. I was never a big fan of Sam Adams, but I had one recently and thought it was much worse than I remembered. I was unaware they had changed it.
They used to make a Rebel IPA which I thought was excellent, but they stopped.
Now I have three main beers:
Pilsner Urquell on hot days
Harpoon IPA on cold days
Guinness when I can get it on tap
One of the many good things about Mexicans is that they are not snooty about much. Corona is not bad, heavily marketed, often discounted and appeals to tourists. The clear glass bottle is iconic, but it is better with lime. Modelo Negro from the same brewer is better, as is Tecate or Pacifico or Dos Equis. Real Mexicans might prefer micheladas, since everything is better with chile.
Snooty people place Corona far from the top and prefer microbrews or tequila añejo.
That wasn’t my point. There’s this preoccupation with what “Real” ™ people prefer.
Actual Mexicans purchase and consume Corona more than other beers, regardless of quality. My point is/was they aren’t going to laugh at the funny foreigners for drinking the same thing they drink themselves.
And that’s fine! They have other options yet they choose this one predominantly. It’s not my cup of tea (or pint of beer, in this case), but what other people, especially people in other countries, choose to drink or not drink doesn’t hurt or affect me either way.
Mexicans would not laugh at you for drinking Corona. Australians would if you, as a tourist, ordered Foster’s. I don’t care one iota what people choose to drink, but that does not make all drinks equally delicious.
I once went to Peru. The bar only sold two types of beer (which they might have brewed). The standard was a very sour lager, not to my taste. Women drank “fruitilla” beer which was a lambic, beer mixed with tropical fruits, and exceptional. I disliked the standard, and loved the fruitilla. Four foot tall Peruvian men wanted to fight me for this merimacho preference.
Anheuser Busch was said to have lost $1B in sales of Bud Light over what is essentially piddling posturing. Most people care more about what “real people prefer” than I do.
Indeed,
Bass is not the same since the In-Bev buyout, at least not in the US. Maybe it is the same in the UK.
Lots of beers have corporate overlords that never should have bought them out.
I don’t trust American brewers with recipes from other coutries.
Wouldn’t put it past them to use or increase the adjuncts like corn or rice in to cut costs.
There were rumours of Miller doing this when they had the license to make Lowenbrau.
