San Diego Gay Men's Chorus prevented from singing at Padres game

When 99.99% of choirs are straight how can you possibly be offended by the .01% and feel they are discriminating? How insecure must you be?

That’s what the Padres did. They fired a guy based on your rule of thumb. An innocent working stiff that made an honest mistake, owned it, and tried to set it straight with those who were offended. Knee jerk reactions usually make someone, or some group, look rather foolish, as do the Padres here.

When people whine about “why are there gay pride, black history month, womens history month”, it brings to mind “why aren’t there any able bodied parking spaces in the grocery store parking lot, why can’t WE have marked parking spots??”

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that vocal homophobes still exist. I don’t know what the Padres can do about it barring putting a muzzle on fans as they enter the ballpark.

The team reacted immediately and appropriately to what was under their control. I read about this the day after it happened, and the Padres had already apologized and etc. I don’t know what more anyone can ask.

I can’t seem to find any specific information about the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus, but the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, the original gay men’s chorus and model for all of the others, is open to all men who audition successfully. Being gay is not a requirement.

I haven’t seen evidence for any part of that interpretation.

Maybe because they’re not discriminating? According to this article about the Heartland Men’s Chorus (Kansas City’s Gay Men’s Chorus):

Basically how this topic is going

here you go:

You have your answers. In the future, if you choose to quote me, please don’t modify, edit, or change my posts when you do it.

Thank you.

Thanks. I admit, that does put it in a new light. I’m still not clear how it didn’t get quickly faded when the error was clear, nor why there was no gesture at apology by anyone at the time. But I’ll accept that the San Diego Padres game production team really is just worse than I thought possible. :stuck_out_tongue:

Editing posts as Peremensoe did is absolutely allowed by the rules of the SDMB. As I demonstrate below. . .

Because of people like the OP, and you, who chose to see injury despite all efforts.

I quoted precisely the sentence I was responding to. I try to always snip quotes to the shortest relevant text, in the service of strict clarity, and avoiding obnoxious useless redundancy. To my understanding this practice is fully within board rules, and I believe it is the most courteous to readers. (There is always the link-back button for anyone who needs a fuller context.)

ETA: Ah, thanks Frank.

There was injury. The only questions were how and why. Malice, or accident.

So, OK, maybe it really was an accident. Still, why let it go on? Why not fade it, announce the mistake and apologize, to chorus and crowd alike, then and there, and then do it right?

In short, I still don’t see “all efforts” to salvage the situation. None at all, at the time.

I guess you missed ED’s ruling…

Do not change quotes of other posters or off-board citations beyond fair usage standards. If you delete material, use either ellipses or descriptive tags (e.g., <snip>, [material deleted], etc.) to indicate you’ve done so. …

What, you mean within 30 seconds? Or a minute? Do you think the CEO of the Padres was in a position to dash to the booth and take over direct control of what music was playing? Then to dash to the announcer’s booth to apologize? Or should he have dashed to the announcer’s booth first, then to stop the music? I’m assuming he has a flash drive containing the correct music in his pocket ready to go.

This has never applied to complete sentences. Posts have been snipped this way ever since I’ve been on this message board, and your view would completely change the way the rule has been applied since 2002.

Thanks for the non-link to “ED’s ruling”.

If you wish to argue the point, please start a thread in ATMB. I will not continue to post on the subject here.

This has been done to death in ATMB. Most people understand the rule.

ETA, here’s another one.

Don’t junior mod. If you have a problem with a post and believe it breaks a rule report it. If you have a question about a rule start an ATMB thread. In this case I see no problem with how you were quoted.

No one continue this hijack.
