Yes but do a poll on this and I bet 90 percent of people would choose the coal plant rather than the nuke plant. Fukushima really did mess up the chances for the nuclear industry for the next 10 years or so. The Japanese are incredibly anal and its a modern very safe and very well organised country, their trains are renowned for being ontime to within 30 seconds. The narrative is that if even the Japanese can’t do nuclear safely then what hope do the rest of us have?

Yet the Japanese themselves, thanks to their visionary Prime Minister Abe, have had no problem restarting nuclear power plants and putting it into operation.

Abe is hardly a visionary, he’s very controversial in Japan and widely hated. He’s also been completely unable to pull their economy out of its long term malaise. Anyway Japan has no choice, they simply can’t meet demand for electricity without Nuclear. During the period after the earthquake when all nuclear plants were shut down they had to ration power during the summer, I was living in Osaka at that time.
