John Lennon **Woman**. Mega-Sappy, icky-poo anthem of devotion to his usual object of adoration, and yet it moves me to tears. Go figure. ---

When I was about 12 years old, I thought Last Kiss was wonderful – so sad and romantic: Well, where oh where can my baby be? The Lord took her away from me. She’s gone to heaven, so I got to be good, So I can see my baby when I leave this world. Then I got older and realized it was a pretty crappy song. So I was gobsmacked when Pearl Jam covered it. Sappy songs that I loved back then and still love are most of Gene Pitney’s oeuvre: Town Without Pity, It Hurts to Be in Love, Half Heaven Half Heartbreak, etc. etc. ---
