This is probably a separate rant, but once an office holder is out of office, the title of that office no longer applies. Hence Sarah Palin should no longer be called Governor Palin, nor should Dick Cheney be called Vice-President. Period. Same for former presidents, mayors, aldermen, senators, etc… Knock it off, dammit!!! Any talking head who uses those titles incorrectly should be flogged. Sorry - just had to get that out of my system. ---

There are honorifics that traditionally follow people after they are no longer serving in that capacity. Judge, Ambassador, and Governor fall into that category. ---

_Sigh_ I remember when people were telling me that I was scared of Sarah Palin. Those were simpler times. It was easy to tell who had no idea what they were talking about. I wish I had kept a list. ---

Thus, Senator George Aiken left the Senate in 1975, and was quite properly referred to as “Governor Aiken” for the rest of his days (he was governor back in the 1930s). Similarly, Elliot Richardson was correctly known as “Ambassador Richardson” right up until his death in 1999, even though his ambassadorship was completed in 1975. You are correct with respect to all other office holders. It is incorrect to speak of Presidents Clinton or Bush (either of them), or Congressman Armey, or Mayor Guilliani. Palin, on the other hand, IS correctly addressed as Governor. (Citation: Judith Martin’s _Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior_) ---
