I don’t have to take a minute. I know perfectly well why. In the first place, Sam, Shodan, Bricker, et. al don’t post anywhere near as much or as often as I do. Secondly, they prefer a more diplomatic approach and they let most of the abuse they come in for slide by without response. Third, they are less inclined to take the fight-fire-with-fire approach to the abuse they come in for, whereas I get in people’s faces much like they get in mine.
Still, I have to say that I’m nowhere nearly as abusive toward the board’s liberal posters as they are with me. Here’s a little challenge for ya:

When I first joined this board I took considerable pains to be polite and let insults roll off my back. This isn’t to say that I never insulted anyone, but generally speaking I tried to take the other side’s points seriously and respond in a respectful tone whenever possible.
But time went by and as the 2009 election got closer and closer, the more strident and insulting and accusatory the rhetoric from the left around here became. It began to be a general meme around here that the only reason anyone could possibly be a conservative was if they were just EVILLL to begin with. And the more and more I heard this view finding acceptance around here, and the more and more I began to see of how you people really regard anyone who thinks differently than you do, the more I found myself thinking “Fuck it, if these assholes want to play that game, let’s get it on”, and so since then I’ve largely posted whatever I wanted to say and haven’t given two fucks whether anybody liked it or not. You assholes want to call conservatives names and impugn their motives, fine, I’ll do the same with you.

- The government workers followed the rules of eligibility.
- Nobody was “tricked”
- The private hospital refused the woman care via their death panel lawyers.
- An exception was made by the government so that she was eligible for a government program.
- The private hospital then relented.
- The government saved this woman’s life.
- Thousands of other people don’t get a special exception - they are given death sentences by private hospital and insurer death panels.
- This problem would not have occured in a country with UHC, since everyone is covered.
- Merely repeating over and over that “the government sucks” is not an argument. It is a pathology.

The lesson to be learned from this is that government is government and it has its rules, and if you happen to fall outside its arbitrary parameters, it will not lift a finger to assist you. A specious argument if ever there was one. The fact remains that had the government either not revoked Smith’s Medicaid insurance or allowed her to cancel her son’s disability benefits and have her Medicaid coverage reinstated, the hospital would have proceeded with her operation.
Yes, once Rush Limbaugh publicized her plight nationally and several Florida lawmakers jumped in, the government suddenly found a way to make her operation happen. Given that she would have been left to die if not for the considerable outside pressures brought to bear on her behalf, I’m at a loss as to why you seem to think this speaks well of the government.
To the degree they either can’t pay or don’t have insurance that covers their particular ailment, they may indeed die. But that isn’t the hospital’s fault, and it isn’t the insurance company’s fault provided they haven’t fraudulently denied coverage. To the degree that some do fraudulently deny coverage, Congress is remiss in my opinion for not passing legislation to deal with that problem. However, I can say that out of all the people I’ve known in my life who’ve had occasion to need surgery or any other treatment they’ve paid to have coverage for, the insurance has always come through. I realize I live in a special bubble of some sort in which nothing for some mysterious reason ever seems to happen in front of me that Dopers find to be routine, but there you have it.
Maybe, maybe not. Coverage is of little use if you die while awaiting treatment. Plus UHC presents a host of other problems large and small which I’ve described before.
You know, I get this all the time and it too is specious. I don’t simply repeat the same stuff over and over for no reason, you know. Accusations of stupidity, moronity and dumbassery follow virtually every pro-conservative or anti-liberal post, and in my opinion it’s far more illustrative of stupidity on the part of those who are doing the name-calling than it is on their target “You’re stoopid”, after all, is not a persuasive rebuttal, and when people stoop to doing so it appears to me as if they’ve got nothing else to bring to the table, with the result that I sometimes declare “victory” in our exchange. I mean, why not? If I ask something like “What would you rather have, government food or food from your local grocer”, or “Where would like to have your car repaired, at a government-run shop or your local auto dealership”, or “Where would you choose to live? In a home or apartment of your own choosing, or in a government financed and run housing project?”, and all you can respond with is “Fuck you, SA! You’re a fucking moron! Why don’t you just shut the fuck up?”, wouldn’t you consider you’d won the argument if you were in my shoes?
