What’s the Straight Dope on the alleged Scottish outlaw and cannibal Sawney Beane, who has been said to have killed anywhere from a few dozen to a thousand travellers during the rule of James I?

[Here](http://tarlton.law.utexas.edu/lpop/etext/newgate/beane.htm) is a sensational retelling of his life…but how much, if any, is true? Thanks.
