Good old Golden Rule, “Treat others as you want to be treated.” It works. Treat people with respect and they will usually treat you well. Go up to them with a chip on your shoulder and they will get difficult. ---

“What your brain forgets, your feet make up.” Usually pronounced by my mother as I whined about having to walk back to refrigerator/study/bedroom to retrieve the ingredients/supplies/clothes I should have thought to grab the first time. “Actions speak louder than words.” I found myself saying this to a partner, who swore he didn’t know what it meant. Somehow that made me feel very old. “It takes 32 muscles to frown, just 20 to smile, and only 15 to extend my middle finger and say, ‘Bite me!’” ---

In a somewhat disturbing way, that makes perfect sense. Certainly fits with my more cynical views of humanity. “When you point, three fingers are aimed at you” Pretty much that we only see faults in others that we have ourselves. And another vote for “This too, shall pass.” not so much a saying as the mantra I live by. ---

“But life isn’t fair; life is just life” (my friend, Donna, who passed way too soon from breast cancer). That has helped me stay balanced through many atrocities. “If you spend all your time looking at your past, you’ll trip over your future” (my sister) “It’s not so much that it takes all kinds, it’s just that we \*\*have \*\* all kinds” (wish I could remember who told me that). “You have two ears and one mouth for a reason” (so you can listen twice as much as you speak - I still don’t embrace that one properly - thanks, Dad). “If you think God _or insert your own preferred power/creation theory here_ doesn’t have a sense of humour, just look around.” (Friend’s father). ---

“Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff.” Many things people worry about aren’t a big deal or won’t matter 2 days from now. You have to learn to separate what’s really important and what’s just a temporary annoyance.
