Scam (Internet and Otherwise) Omnibus Thread

I’m afraid I may be Rachel. I keep receiving texts addressed to Rachel, asking how much funding I need to run my (non-existent) restaurant.

I hit the idiot jackpot this week. Typical multi millions of dollars belonging to a dead dude and I’m supposed to pretend to be a relative before the government confiscates the dough.

Starting on Saturday, 73 emails, filled out a (fake) bank account application, sent four different payments (wire transfer, mobile deposit of personal check, Bitcoin, Moneygram) all of which failed.

Sent two photos of the Moneygram that are corrupted in different ways and accused them of stealing my money(screenshot of Moneygram’s website showing the payment was picked up(actually a long since used number with the name they gave me). All I have left are fake gift cards. On top of all this, the clown who’s in charge of sending the first contact emails sent it again.

Just found this in my inbox (login link removed):

Yeah, there was only one t.co link to remove; there should be five more links but those are just blue text. Not a thing saying who the hell they’re supposed to be; not even an image, just a blank box.

Discussion about Indian accents and potential scam calls woven into discussion of recovery options.

Ends with mod note, @puzzlegal suggested I link it here.

Happy Ferny Branch Day, everyone! Remember, cryptomarkets and banks are closed today.

NO! < collapses into fainting couch >

(I believe Jackmannii is well aware it is a scam)

There’s bad scammer Photoshop and then there’s this…

appropriately titled “death certificate 66666”. That must mean the person is not only merely dead, he’s really most sincerely dead.
And the leather texture is merely a courtesy detail.

Could this be any more obvious?

Attn: My Dear, I am Mrs Alice Bryan, I am a USA citizen 48 years Old. I am from New York, i am thinking of relocating since I am now rich, I am one of those that took part in the Compensation in Nigeria many years ago and they refused to pay me, I had paid over $100,000 while in the United State trying to get my payment all to no avail. So I decided to travel to WASHINGTON D.C with all my compensation documents, And I was directed by the ( F B I) Director to contact Mrs. Erelu Angela who is a representative of the ( FB I ) and a member of the COMPENSATION AWARD COMMITTEE in Republic of Benin and I contacted her, she explained everything to me. she said whoever is contacting us through emails are fake. She took me to the paying bank for the claim of my Compensation payment. Right now I am the most happiest woman on earth because I have received my compensation funds of $30 Million Us Dollars, Moreover, Mrs. Erelu Angela showed me the full information of those that are yet to receive their payment and I saw your email address as one of the beneficiaries, that is why I decided to email you to stop dealing with those people that are contacting you they are not with your fund, they are only making money out of you i will advise you to contact Mrs. Erelu Angela. You have to contact her directly on this information below. COMPENSATION AWARD HOUSE Name: MRS. ERELU ANGELA Email: (redacted) You really have to stop dealing with those people that are contacting you and telling you that your funds is with them, it is not in anyway with them they are only taking advantage of you and they will dry you up until you have nothing. The only money I paid after I met Mrs. Erelu Angela was just $400 for the paper works take note of that. Once again stop contacting those people, I will advise you to contact Mrs. Erelu Angela so that she can help you to Deliver your fund instead of dealing with those liars that will be turning you around asking for different kind of money to complete your transaction. Regards, Mrs. Alice Bryan.

And yet, I “fell” for it.

I just found two different bits of Postal Service scam in my inbox. I can see people easily being taken in by these if they don’t bother to scroll to the bottom to see the “USPS International GmbH” line and realize what it means.

I recently received a scam email, but it was in Japanese, but not regular Japanese with Japanese characters, but in romaji, which is using roman characters to write it out phonetically. I gave up trying to understand it after the first few words because it really is difficult to follow unless you are used to reading it in that form, and you can’t even use google translate to do the translation. No Japanese person I know would write something that way, so really a poor effort on the scammer.

Brief synopsis. Citibank has 7.5 million as compensation for being scammed. They want $600 as an account opening fee.(For some reason, they can’t just send it to my account, I have to open an account with Citibank and transfer from there) Oddly enough, the fee has to be sent to a Bank of America account.
Fake wire transfer, transfer fails, I tell them my bank is getting my money back, they want Bitcoin. They get a fake Bitcoin receipt.

Them: “Received, thank you fool”
Me: '“You’re quite welcome.”

Waiting for a response but they might not reply.

Today I had to transfer quite a large sum of money out of my account (in fact, the largest amount of money I have ever handled in one transaction in my life). I am very happy to report that my bank asked me a lot of questions to ensure I wasn’t paying a scammer - they had a system where they asked me a set of questions (like is the money for a friend, or an investment etc) and their system tailored the next round of questions to tease out any possibility of a scam. I was quite impressed and heartened.

I am not being scammed BTW - the Gold mining company in Ghana has sent me a picture of the bars.

I just got a bit of UPS phishing that wants me to click through a blogspot of all places.

I’ve reported them to UPS and Google, which manages those blogs.

This is a pretty good phish & made it past Gmail’s usually efficient filter. I had just reset my AT&T account password and almost fell for it. Check the “at.tnet@yahoo.com” return address – huh? And the “UPDATE FOR ALL AT&T USER” subject line. Reported it as spam, for all the good it will do.

CVS scammers have been busy lately. I was selected Winner Of This Month (sic) seven times yesterday and once the day before.

I’ve won no fewer than twenty Yeti coolers from Dick’s Sporting Goods in the last two months. You’d think they’d at least mix it up a little and try to catch people who aren’t enticed by a free Yeti cooler.

I’ve hit the Stupid Jackpot

Greetings Dr. Clark,
My name is Peter Mosse. There is little of me that is interesting. I previously worked as an airflow engineer but recently retired due to the effects of Rhett-Butler Syndrome. I do not have personal photographs as I am a practitioner of Tauvism thus they are an abomination to me.

I’ve been getting a lot of very similar spam purporting to come right from Yahoo, no AT&T. I’ve never even opened it.

Is that the diseases where you don’t give a damn? :grinning:

I have yet to be able to use that particular line. I usually claim it’s caused from welding Hyponium(a flame retardant alloy used in shipbuilding) and results in neurological symptoms that prevent travel/speaking on the phone depending on what I’m trying to avoid.

Tell him you really like Right Place, Wrong Time.
