> About five years ago I was home with a bad cold. I had heard that _The Thing_ was a great movie, but I had always been too scared to watch it. I felt silly about that, so I made up my mind to watch it that day.

I finally watched it about two years ago. I didn’t find it scary. At all. That’s how it has been with most of the movies people cite as “scariest” because they watched them as kids and I wasn’t allowed to: **Changeling, The Fog, Jaws, Jacob’s Ladder** etc.

The reason I wasn’t allowed to watch horror movies is my parents made the mistake of taking me to see **Poltergeist**. I wasn’t quite five and had nightmares for a year.

Anyway… **The Ring** is kind of scary. And **Boogeyman**. And **Event Horizon**. Parts of **Rose Red**. **Pandorum**. Probably the scariest movie I’ve ever seen as an adult, however, is **In The Mouth Of Madness**.

Other than Sandra Bullock being ridiculously too old for the protagonist, I’m looking forward to the adaptation of **Bird Box** , because the novel is pretty damn scary. It’s unfortunate, however, that it wasn’t released before **A Quiet Place** , which is similar.

Black and white, made in 1958 sure. But terrifying to a boy foolish enough to stay up late and watch it one night. Still gives me shivers.

Yup. For '55, not bad for a [creepy scene](https://youtu.be/uF7uscfKrjA?t=4013).
Especially when she sings along with him.

And for '60, quite [menacingly sadistic.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pwb4Y9INWY)
(From the excellent _Peeping Tom_)

How about scary film images?

Right after the letter “G”, at [@ 2:47](https://youtu.be/oJ_t1eOAipo?t=165) in this old David Lynch short.

Wasn’t quite expecting [this](https://youtu.be/LBtHBWs0__g?t=72) in what I incorrectly expected would be a “non-scary” scene from _The Ring_. (please - not to be confused with the second line from _Needles and Pins_)

Heh, [First Evil Face Appearance](https://youtu.be/TD0RJ_iuBPo?t=18) (@ 0:22) in _The Exorcist_

Couldn’t find adequate footage of Mrs. Allardyce and the million-watt-smile of the hearse driver from _Burnt Offerings_.

The Exorcist - story. I saw it the first time and it was great/frightening. Second time was with a new girlfriend who was a devout Catholic. I knew what was coming and it was humorous (actually) to me. She was squigged out. Never saw her again; found out she withdrew from school and returned home within two weeks of our movie date.

Alien - interesting dinner scene among others

Cape Fear-good old family stalking.

For disturbing, I’d go with SE7EN (SEVEN).

Have you ever seen one called Twisted Nerve with Hywel Bennett?

For me, the scariest movie is going to be a YouTube video of some hipster moron free-climbing a ten-thousand foot high tower and doing handstands and one-armed push-ups and the Lindy Hop at the top.

Poltergeist - I saw it when I was in first grade, after begging and pleading with my parents. They relented - fools.

I know for a fact they did not have sex in their bed at night for about a year, because I was there, every night, screaming down the hallway the entire way.

Right - for inducing a cardiac arrest in someone ridiculously vertiginous like myself, sure - I won’t argue with that.
Once, I stupidly youtubed “cliff falls”, saw maybe a bit of one video, then got the hell outa there, feeling not only whoozy but also skeevy for even going there.

Ah yes, Karen Black as Mrs Allardyce. Funny how they lose their scariness when seen out of context.

[_The Fool Killer_(1965)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fool_Killer), with Anthony Perkins. Same creepy vibe as _Night Of The Hunter_, but more violent.
