The one scene I’ve seen recently that pops into mind is the “Sicilian Ancestry” scene in _True Romance_. I’ve never seen the movie and only recently Youtubed for the scene in order to see what everyone was talking about. It was good to watch once, but I wouldn’t want to see it again cause it is so offensive that it makes me almost sympathetic for murderous gangster thugs. I know that this offensiveness was quite calculated in the plot, but still.

Ehh, you may want to reconsider some day. The Steve Carrell character eventually catches on to (is told) how awfully weird he is, and when it’s suggested that he can transcend his mis-fittedness by embracing his awfulness, he rallies magnificently. It’s mostly a pretty feel-good ending.

The beginning of the move “Buried” with Ryan Reynolds where is he is buried alive in a coffin. I still do not know how that movie ends because I walked out and never wanted to have anything to do with it.

You went to see a movie called “Buried” and were upset that the movie immediately delivered what the title promised? 😉

I’m surprised that you are the only one to mention this. It’s made so much worse by having an asshole who punishes the awkward character even though the character can’t help it.

And at least I made it through that one. Not so the sequels.

_Meet the Parents_ would have been a much better movie if the filmmakers had had the balls to make the subtextual antisemitism text.

When I say “better” I mean as extremely dark comedy, obviously.

> Absolutely any scene in which the character is saying or doing something that I as the viewer know is embarrassing, but the character doesn’t(yet). Basically, I become embarrassed _for_ them. I’m trying to think of an actual example, and drawing a blank, of course. Lots of “mistaken identity” scenes fit this scenario, like this hypothetical: Our hero very loudly and publicly proclaims his love to a woman he’s, until this moment, only communicated with via letters. But, actually, he’s made a mistake, and this isn’t “his girl”, -the woman he’s showering with affection has no idea who he is at all- he’s making an ass out of himself in front of complete strangers! If I have never seen the girl, either, it’s not awkward. But if I _know_ he’s got the wrong girl and is about to humiliate himself, I have a hard time with it.

Mine’s a slight variation on this. I hate any scene in which a character is heading for disaster and doesn’t know it. Let’s say that they lied at the begining of the movie. Then, they have to keep on lying, just to keep things coherent. They think that they have everything under control but we, the viewers, know that some people have gotten suspicious and that they are going to find out the truth soon. We see that character getting deeper and deeper into trouble without realizing it. I just can’t stand this type of scenes. They happen a lot in rom-coms.

When the big confrontation comes, I have to leave the room.

> Off-topic, but for me this extends to other things besides movies. Ever watch the news and they’re interviewing some local who’s just making himself look/sound like an idiot, and he’s _such_ an idiot that he doesn’t even realize he’s coming off like an imbecile? Unwatchable. I can’t bear it. I can’t even listen when people call into radio stations to request a song- I’m just absolutely _sure_ they’re gonna get the title or the artist wrong, or god forbid, start singing. Too much embarrassment-by-proxy potential for me.

Same here :o.
