I was a little puzzled by the OP, because as far as I can tell, almost ALL science fiction movies are turned into action movies, and this is a pet peeve of mine (hey, Hollywood - just substituting a laser gun for a revolver doesn’t make it sci-fi, okay?). I think it would be easier to list the sci-fi movies that _aren’t_ action movies.

How about **The Abyss**? 🙂

\*\*Contact \*\* is also not an “action movie”

You aren’t alone! I came in here to mention Riddick, along with the fact that I figured _I_ was the only one.
[/QUOTE]

I didn’t care for The Chronicles of Riddick, but I loved **Pitch Black**.

Also good. I think that was the first survival movie that I saw where I wasn’t able to predict who was going to die and who was going to live within the first 15 minutes.

I _adore_ this movie. It is beautiful. Zany, outrageous, but so beautiful. (That, and I’m more than a bit partial to Leeloo. 😃 ) Although I usually lean towards the sci-fi with complex plots and ethical dilemmas, there is the occasional flick that is just so amazing in other ways that I can ignore that one point where they might be lacking.

Minority Report, IMO, was excellent. I have never read the story, which as with most books-turned-movies, is probably much more thoughtful and in-depth, and if that’s the case I’ll definitely have to check it out, because I thought the movie was made exceptionally well.

The first one to discover “the secret” will be the first to die. The dumb blonde will live longer than expected, but she’s still going to die. If there are two people who’ve had a past relationship or sexual tension, they will survive so they can get together at the end. 😛

None of which really happens in **Pitch Black**. 🙂
