I don’t remember ever seeing this before - a thread Godwinned in the OP.
Yes…clearly…
You chose…poorly.
Scientists do not seek to “burn books, destroy artifacts, even raze entire cities to promote their own agenda”. Has there ever even been an example of this happening ever? And your comparison to “Nazis” is just ignorant and offensive.
The reason people of Science often take issue with Astrology, Witchcraft, Zen, the Occult, and even God is that people who believe in these things often promote misinformed and even dangerous policies based solely on their belief. Science doesn’t rely on belief. It relies on the collection of evidence and observations that are objective, measurable and repeatable. In other words “proof”.
Although I’m starting to realize why Einstein built that bomb.
At a guess, your actual problem with skeptics boils down to them being right and you being wrong.
I’m rather skeptical of the validity of that comparison.
It’s not. However, it works, while religion and astrology and so forth don’t work. And they are going to keep on not working, no matter how much you bash science and skepticism.
If there is, we have nothing else that can explain it. Just because science fails to explain something doesn’t mean any of the so-called “alternatives” *can. *
Fun fact: before he was put under house arrest for teaching helio-centrism, Galileo was charged by the Inquisition for practicing astrology.
Not really sure how that fits in to the OP, but I thought it was interesting. And it does involve the persecution of astrologers.
Hey, Miss Cleo was persecuted to!! Maybe the OP is on to something.
I think this is the heart of the issue.
Science really doesn’t care what anyone else believes. Science cares when those beliefs lead to dangerous ends.
Wanna be a Christian/Wiccan/Hindu…
No problem, you can still be a scientist and the scientific community will accept you based upon the validity of your work.
Wanna endanger others in order to confirm your beliefs?
Science is gonna have an issue with that.
I admit, in the past I’ve razed two or three cities, but I’m on medication now.
I am skeptical of the OP’s return to this topic.
Does that make me a nazi?
MoreThanScience, rants go in The BBQ Pit, not Great Debates.
First they came for the numbers, and I said nothing because I wasn’t a number…
I believe you got the time wrong on that one.
[QUOTE=MoreThanScience With Paragraphs]
I’ve always had a problem with most Skeptics’ viewpoints but could never properly express my attitude until now. I recently watched “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” and can now put my perspective into words.
The reason I don’t like Skeptics (or anyone claiming to have a skeptic’s philosophy) is because I equate Skepticism with Nazism. I know that such a comparison will most likely blacklist me but allow me to explain…
Skeptics have no problem doing anything to destroy any ideology that suggests Science might not have all the answers. Skeptics would burn books, destroy artifacts, even raze entire cities to promote their own agenda – JUST LIKE THE NAZIS!! Anything having to do with Astrology, Witchcraft, Zen, the Occult, and especially GOD or anything else Science cannot address or considers “bullshit” is on their Banishment List.
If you claim you would never go to such extremes, you are lying to yourself. Even if you think you would never personally participate in such activities, you would not intervene in such activities from others. You would stand idly by, allowing such measures to go on, never defending the rights of individuals to believe what they want to believe, even if you disagree with such beliefs. Most skeptics would go to any length to wipe out any beliefs they don’t agree with – JUST LIKE THE NAZIS!!
“I’m not Jewish so I don’t have any problem with them hauling away Jews.”
“I’m not a Gypsy so I don’t have any problem with them hauling away Gypsies.”
“I don’t believe in Astrology so I don’t have any problem with them hauling away Astrologers.”
“I don’t believe in God so I don’t have any problem with them hauling away anyone who believes in God.”
If Science is so secure in its position of “superiority”, what do you have to fear from anyone who might think Science isn’t a panacea?! If Science is truly THE TRUTH, why can’t you just let anyone come to their own conclusions instead of trying to force your own value system down their throats? If Science ultimately has all the answers, people will (eventually) arrive at that same conclusion.
But I don’t think it does, at least not in its current understanding.
If you think people are “ignorant” for believing in such “nonsense”, you are no different than the Nazis. Live and let live. Allow people to arrive at their own conclusions, even if you don’t agree with them. Simply because someone may not agree with Science doesn’t mean they are ignorant! It simply means they are questioning this world, which, as I understand it is the whole point of Science.
I love Science and I love Technology. But I believe there is far more to this Universe than what Science can explain. And if you call me ignorant, you are a Nazi.
SIEG HEIL!!

I felt I should separate this into paragraphs. Mainly because, well, everyone should read this. This is the funniest thing I have ever read on this forum, other than maybe that one guy a month or two back complaining about how gays were feminizing black men or something like that. This is just the most misguided, ignorant, over-the-top rant… Man, I can’t stop laughing. I have never seen such a failed misrepresentation of skeptical tenets, positions, or actions. It’s hilarious.
What if I call you a moron?
He ain’t coming back, fellas.
I don’t know. If there is a panacea, what other than science would it be?
From Raiders of the Lost Ark, Dr. Jones himself (paraphrased): “Archeology is the study of FACT, not TRUTH. If it’s truth you want, Dr. So-and-so’s Philosophy class is just down the hall.” Using a scientist and a skeptic to try to cast a bad light on science and skepticism is a profoundly bad choice. :dubious:
Yes, we have it! The apotheosis of the OP! Ignorant, simplistic, anti-intellectual, poorly-written, and embarrasingly naive. Hilarity ensues.
Bless you, OP.
Oh yeah, I forgot the flagrant Godwin violation. Absolute perfection.
I realize that the poster is likely a troll and/or thirteen years old, which seems like it would ruin the fun, but you guys have mastered the art of riffing on an OP without mocking it. My favorite type of thread.
I could never articulate my perspective on terrorism until I saw Die Hard 2: Die Harder.
Well, to play Devil’s Advocate (may I, Marge?) the esteemed Dr. Henry Jones, Jr. did specify philosophy as the gateway to “truth”, not science. And when you take into account the ever-popular xkcd Wikipedia Game which always resolves to philosophy, not science, well – maybe science should at least recognize it’s not the top dog when it comes to discovering secrets of the universe, from the Ancient Greeks through modern day and beyond.
Whether or not science is a panacea isn’t the question. The real question is – what problem is the OP talking about?
Regarding the XKCD Wikipedia game, it’s no longer true, if it ever was.
