Typical religious arrogance, and certainly not something worth necroing a thread with.
And it’s “atheist”.

GregE625, do you have a cite for Jerry Seinfeld saying that or did you make that up?
I remembered it from his show.
Which God are you speaking about? Our history goes back only several thousand years and most of that time there were many gods revered at the same time even; so how can you be sure there is only one God? Also, it was only due to the Roman Empire on the wane that we have a universal/one God civilization as they determined that worshiping gods other than Yahwey was paganism in order to better control the populace. The first and greatest civilization had a pantheon of 12 gods, and at the top was Anu who pretty much stayed on his home planet except for occasional visits, Enlil his 2nd born son was Commander in Chief of Earth, and Ea his first-born and Commander of all the waters of Earth, who I believe became the Jewish and Christian God Jehovah/Yahwey. None of the other Gods were as powerful as these three, but none as cunning nor compassionate as our God Ea/Jehovah/Yahwey.
Today we no longer recognize that God created us in his “image” and “likeness” but that he is “spirit” because God as He is is not satisfactory to us thanks to the Church. It is the Church’s fault no one has a clear image of who God is today, it is their lack of faith that brought this about (that damn Darwin story got them all shook up they of little faith who control us), because the true story of God makes Him too human. But I say it is a much better and million times more interesting story that He is like us, or rather that we are like him in looks and manner. I’m not selling God short here, He is still far and away more than we can ever hope to become, but I like that he is a more personal and humanlike persona than any Church would admit.
I believe the gods (with our God Ea later to be called Yahwey as the main scientist god) created man from hominids, upgrading them with their own DNA to make slaves to work the mines in Africa for gold for their own planet as they were having the same problem we are now facing with the ozone layer and gold is the uv rays filter needed. Hell of a story, eh? Read Zecharia Sitchin’s “The 12th Planet” for the true account and proof of God’s existence.
Finally, I think I’ll change my name to “RamblinMan”.
There is scientific knowledge of God. The Sumerians wrote that everything they knew they got from the gods. They knew the earth was round, knew and mapped the constellations, the names of Zodiac was from Sumerians, they knew of all the planets in our solar system plus one more, the Planet of Crossing, Nibiru. There are drawings of our solar system with all the planets drawn in proportion to one another; they fully understood mathematically precession. We only just discovered Pluto 78 years ago, this is proof to me the gods were here as this was the first real civilization so how could they get such knowledge. There were countless stories written about the pantheon of 12 gods and many lesser gods and finally the rank and file gods. Thousands of years before our bible, the stories told of a God named Ea who created man from hominids then gave him knowledge against the command of Enlil; Ea also saved Noah from the flood against the command of Enlil again. Ea was the great scientist God who alone could raise the dead, and later was revered by the Hebrew and Christian God. It is written he had six sons, and according to Edgar Cayce, the sleeping prophet, the God Thoth of Egypt reincarnated into Jesus. I found that to be a wonderful confirmation because I know that Thoth (actually Tuhutti) was Ningishzidda in Sumer and he was son of Ea. So Ea who I believe became our God Jehovah/Yahwey was father to Jesus who previously was Thoth/Ningishzidda, so Jesus is the son of God - confirmation. Btw, Thoth was usurped by his brother and there is some evidence he took followers to America (American Indians have Egyptian ancestry it is said which conforms with the idea that followers from Egypt may have come to America with Thoth); he also was in Peru and Mexico and may have been either or both Viracocha or Quetzecoatl. PS: There is a fantastic Peruvian rock drawing that depicts the heavens and earth and it shows the central figure of the drawing to be a planet we have not yet seen in our solar system, the Planet of the Gods.
What God do we worship if many come down to earth together, and do they deserve worship? I for one want to know their names although I will bow to all but owe my allegiance to Ea/Jehovah/Yahwey as he was the compassionate God who created us in his image and likeness, saved us from the Deluge against the wishes of the god counsel, gave us free will and freedom from slavery. In short, He is our Great Father in Heaven who deserves all our reverence. Or He may kill us or leave us behind when he saves his worshippers
I think you’re memory is wrong here. Had Jerry said that on a Seinfeld episode, I would have remembered it and be able to find that quote with a Google search.
Anything is possible. I can’t find it on Google either, but I sure remember it pretty clearly. Unfortunately I don’t own the DVD series, but if I run across the episode I’ll send a note.
I don’t think you understand what constitutes scientific evidence.
Not true. The Sumerians, like all ancient peoples, knew only of the planets they could see with the naked eye.
Great. They made a carving of an imaginary planet. This proves what?
But suppose that all the gods are lies except for the Aztec pantheon. There is no Jehovah, just Tezcatlipoca. Will you bow down to him and offer him human sacrifices?
It’s unclear to me why, even if God or Gods were to exist, they need to be worshipped.
Wanting to be worshipped seems like the sort of thing that would disqualify you from being The Supreme Being.
If you really are the ultimate creator of Time, Space and Hamsters, what do you care if some grubby little half-monkeys bow down to you or not? It seems like you’d be above such pettiness.
I don’t think you need to worship the supreme intelligence – God.
Here is one person’s view, I agree with.
but but but— I wanna be LOVED! sniff!
“God”
Jack
If you are God, you are love.
I want to start crying again.
Thank you.
You have just made my millenium.
(:o :o I almost missed this reply to me, which is extremely embarrassing when you are omnicient.)
The god most people worship could easily make a big godly display and reveal himself to all mankind. After all in this huge and incredible universe, he has an interest in people in on this fly speck of a planet getting on their hands and knees and worshiping him. That strikes me as so sick and petty that I can not relate to it. He has supernovae, black holes and intersecting galaxies to worry about. I have trouble getting over the ego of men who think their petty praying noises are important to this creature.
If I were going to worship a god. I would go for the one that created that god. Now you have something there. This is big time.
With respect - if life is so terrible and ‘not worth living’ then why are you still here? - Jesse.
Because the world has improved. In no small part because religion has become weaker. And because I’m lucky to live in one of the more pleasant places and situations in one of the better periods of history. As opposed to being a serf or slave, like much of humanity has been. As I said in the passage you quoted; the idea that life is worth living is a modern one; and these are modern times.
G’morning Der Trihs!
In what way do you feel the world has improved? The world’s never been a bigger mess and the only thing we’ve perfected over the millenia is the questionable art of killing one another.
I too live in a peaceful, beautiful place, and in a pristine environment, but I am not unaware of the suffering of the masses. Perhaps you and I live a better life, but most people do not.
My own experience living in ‘third world’ countries and working with the poor has taught me that those who are happiest have four things in common - faith, hope, love, and family. I disagree with your statement that religion has become weaker. If we confined it to the western world, I’d agree, but elsewhere most people live by faith - oftentimes that’s all they have.
I’m curious, have you yourself traveled abroad and mingled with the ‘lost, lonely, and wretched’?
Jesse.
Antibiotics, the relegation of slavery to an aberration not the norm, democracy, painkillers, modern sanitation, women’s rights, the Geneva Convention, and a near endless list of other things.
Actually, we kill fewer people as a percentage of the population than we did in the past; death by violence is the exception, not the norm. That’s one reason why there are so many people, especially old people. They live. And the world is far less of a “mess” than it has been in the past.
And not coincidentally, those are the places that are still hellholes. Religion corrupts, and it seeks to maintain an environment of despair because that benefits it. Rather like a virus makes you sneeze or vomit to spread itself better. Until they are willing to shove it to one side, they will be handicapped and remain in misery.
Hmmmm…
So what you’re saying is that these two statements are equally logical:
There exists a being, called God by those who worship Him, who created the universe in which we live.
There exists an airborne goblin made out of a delicious Italian cuisine.
Not to be assuming, but it sounds like your statement might have some emotional bias. I can certainly understand one saying that there is no logical proof of God’s existence, but in comparing the above statements lets examine the Argument From Existence. It is a common argument for God’s existence, at least according to Christian Apologetics, that God’s existence is proven through the fact that we exist. This is directly related to the Argument From Causality which I won’t discuss here. Personally, I don’t feel this is as strong an argument as there is available but I do think it holds some merit. Without any scientific evidence of where the universe came from, what existed before the Big Bang, etc., I don’t believe its illogical to say that we were created by something. However, applying the same argument to your Pasta-Filled Personal Pilot, it does seem illogical to say that since spaghetti exists, there must also exist a Flying Spaghetti Monster.
You see, we have significant evidence of where pasta was created. The Etruscans made some dough from grain, mixed it with water, and they had some pasta. But, while there are several theories on the nature of the universe and its parts (which by the way consist of far more than grain and water), there is no evidence of its origins.
In short, while atheists do not believe in God, and may consider all arguments and proof as illogical and based on pre-existing beliefs, there is indeed more evidence for the existence of God than there is for your Fictional Fettucini Frankenstein. And I think that any logical (and emotionally neutral debater) would agree on that fact.
With this understanding, I believe it should at least open to you the possibility that God’s existence could be proven if indeed He does exist. Many religious followers are guilty of making arguments for God’s existence that only make sense if you already assume God’s existence. It seems here, that you’re denying the possibility that God could exist based on your belief that God doesn’t exist. The flaw is the same you see.
Cheers and Cheerleaders,
Robert
