The thing is, if it decided to, USPS could prosecute you for putting something in your own mailbox, maybe something a friend forgot at your house. Or they could prosecute your or your neighbors for putting invitations to a block party into the boxes on the block. Hell, they could prosecute you for putting Christmas decorations on the box.
I bought the box, and it’s on my property, but they claim to own it. I have a problem with that.
Do you mean that if the mailman puts a letter in my mailbox that is actually addressed to a neighbor (that happens a lot a round here) that I could be prosecuted for returning it to the mailbox with a note on it saying “delivered to wrong address”?
Actually, several months ago we had a letter, containing a check, stolen from our box. The check was washed, rewritten for a rather large sum, and cashed the same day.
When I reported this to the Post Office here, they were totally uninterested. The only question they asked was “Well do you think it was a Post Office employee who did this?”
And yes, the bank refunded the money to our checking account, and ate the loss.
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Use a pen like a Uniball #207 to write checks. It uses a pigmented ink that cannot be washed. Pens using a dye-based ink (most ball point pens are like this) can be washed in a matter of minutes. Found this out on a web site that has detailed instructions on how to wash a chedk. I could start a new career.
The thing is, as the law stands, if the Church of Scientology, or anyone else wants an invitation delivered to my mailbox they need to put proper postage on it.
FYI, not all mailboxes are on the property of the address they serve.
Nope. Don’t want ANYONE putting anything in my mailbox, other than the Post Office. This goes for the Scouts, too. They want to give me a flyer, they can either pay for the stamp/pay for bulk mailing, or they can put it somewhere else. If we allow the Scouts to put flyers in mailboxes, we have to allow the Scientologists to do the same thing, which is how this thread got started.
And I’d like to get rid of the “charity or political organization” exemption on the Do Not Call list. There’s a reason I’m on that list…it’s because I don’t want to be called, except for personal calls, and very rarely, business calls. I don’t want every charity calling me up because they are robodialing and because they don’t have to abide by the DNC list. If I want to donate to a charity, I DO know how to get my money to that charity.
