Not to hijack the thread or anything, but I’m confused: The King of Scotland inherited the throne of England, not the other way around. How, then, would the monarchy be affected by independence?
If the yes side win the referendum the position of the monarchy would be discussed in the separation negotiations but I wouldn’t expect the position to change that much while the queen remains on the throne. When she dies things might begin to change quite radically, but that would also apply to Canada, Australia etc.
That is, it’s possible the Scottish monarchy might be abolished separately? Or the monarchy overall?
If the monarchy falls, what ever will they do with the Stone of Scone?
LOL
And for the love of gawd, do NOT call Scots people Brits, they don’t like that at all. Well none of the ones I met did!
To be fair, Mike Myers has a Scottish dad, so he’s picked up the accent naturally. See “So I Married an Axe Murderer” for more examples of his expert grasp of the culture ![]()
(“Piper down! We have a piper down!”)
This is going to confuse things - even if Scots don’t like being called “Brits”, they are actually British. What was being objected to earlier was “Brits” being used synonymously with English in a sentence which also mentioned Scots.
Of course - if Scotland becomes independent it could obviously do what it likes with the monarchy. At present the most likely thing would be to keep it though, or alter the terms in some way especially for Scotland.
And it’s always possible that the monarchy could be abolished in the UK even if Scotland doesn’t become independent, especially once the queen dies. It’s just that that’s not very likely.
The dad’s accent in that film is scarily like my dad’s accent ![]()
I realize that; what I was wondering was if it would be possible to abolish the Scottish monarchy independently of the UK’s.
In an independent Scotland, yes, sure. An independent Scotland would be in the same position as Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the other Realms in that respect.
Question out of left field: Is there any possibility of a Stuart restoration? Has anyone ever raised it? Are there even any pretenders currently alive?
Aye, I think there is a Stuart pretender out there somewhere, some French bloke. The possibility of an actual restoration is almost zero though. Honestly, the whole monarchy thing is not a pressing matter for most.
Here’s my idea of a Scotsman selling me Scotch whiskey…and all in one take. Brilliant!

There is a cringe-worthy moment in a movie called A Life Less Ordinary in which Cameron Diaz explains to a neighbor at the door that her “boyfriend” (Ewan MacGregor) is “… from Scotland. That’s in England.”
As do I. But there may well be more than one version. I’ve seen it a few times and it’s…odd. Despite the thread it engendered, NOT thought-worthy odd, however. Just…odd.
If it ain’t Scottish, it’s crap! (One of my favorite movies ever
)
I’m not Scottish. I know Forlani’s accent is fake. I think the commercial is brilliant.
Do you know something I don’t?
