I, for one, am saddened by the turn Adams’ life took, and I hope he found some peace at the end. I was a fan of his early work with _Dilbert._ We even had one of his books, _The Dilbert Principle_, which teaches: “The most incompetent workers are invariably put in the place where they can do the least amount of damage: Management.” ---

Thanks for posting this, I really enjoyed the read. I’m not familiar with Scott Alexander but I’m going to read more of his work. I also loved Dilbert as a kid/teen but eventually moved on, and didn’t pay any attention until he got canceled and went full maga. It was nice to fill in the gaps. ---

I got the impression he was trying to be sympathetic about someone he once admired. But there was a certain amount of bending over backwards, yes. ---

The article did clue me in on all the self-help books Adams wrote, and the political punditry. I never knew any of that. “He successfully predicted ten of the last zero recessions.” But the analysis of the reaction formation was interesting. I think I understood it before, but never know it was common, never appreciated how it governs a lot of behavior.
