hmm… I always thought it was sexual since I’ve got three female cats that all raise their tails etc when you do it. Plus my female dog would actaully move her tail out of the way as if waiting for something. MY male cat doesn’t do anything when I pet him there.

Actually, I don’t think that’s true.

From what I’ve seen, and it’s only been on a couple of nature shows and one that tried to delve into cat ‘thinking’, it showed copulation between cats as almost a sadomasochistic endeavor.

That is, the male cat doesn’t really mess around with that region with any other part of his body except for the obvious. What the male does do, while in the act, is chomp down on the back of the females neck. He basically chomps down with his jaws and holds the females head down to the ground while he goes at it.

Kinda strange seeing it, but that behavior goes all the way back to the big cats as well.

Where their paws are during this time is basically on the middle of the females back.

I don’t know what any of that adds, but it seems to me the reaction to the scratch is less of a sexual one and possibly more of the other one explained here earlier talking about defecation and whatnot.
