Many on the left, not all, whine and cry and want to ban and suppress those posters while those whining post even nastier comments. It’s pure hypocrisy and intellectual dishonesty. It’s this simple. If you want cordiality, especially on a board that can enforce it to some degree, insist on cordiality. How’s my tone toward you, iiandyiiii? At first, I thought you were a gimmick because you are almost too nice. But if you are a gimmick you are a damn consistent one. You reminded me of someone else I knew that was in the navy and he was consistently calm and a pleasure to work with. Even if I disagree with you I never feel annoyed with a back and forth with you. And you don’t typically make things personal. I consider you a positive presence. But back to left wing violence. There is no excuse to tolerate illiberal attitudes as part of the Democratic Party. It’s dangerous to do so. The lack of tolerance for liberty is scary. The ACLU and others recognize the left’s chilling move towards suppression of speech and ideas. Combine that with hooliganism and what do you think the law and order backlash will look like? ---

Thanks for the kind words. A few things – there are good discussions on this board. There are also, obviously, insult contests and the like. Often both in the same thread. I see, very commonly, posters will focus on the insults at the expense of the good conversations, most likely because they get caught up in the emotions of the discussion. It takes some discipline, but this can be avoided (or, at the very least, you can simultaneously be insulting back and forth with the insulters while debating reasonably with the debaters). It takes some effort, but I think it’s worth it if one enjoys this kind of discussion. Secondly, this board is mostly liberal, and 100% human (as far as I know). Humans are typically more likely to notice dishonesty, hypocrisy, and the like, when it comes from people who disagree with them than from people who agree with them. That’s just how humans are, in my experience. I do my best but I’m sure I’m guilty of this as well – I’m probably pointing out your (in my mind) “misbehavior” in this thread while ignoring the misbehavior of others, because yours stands out to me more in my mind. I always try to catch myself, and improve myself. But my point is that your complaint about liberal hypocrisy and such on this board is just a complaint about a mostly liberal, all human board. It’s just human nature – it’d be extraordinary if every or even most Dopers were able to be completely objective when judging intellectual hypocrisy. Almost no one is capable of this. The bad real-world behavior (violence and vandalism and such) you complain of exists but is still a tiny proportion of the protests, and a tiny proportion of actual liberals. It sucks that it exists, but it always has and probably always will, in any political movement (particularly one with lots of younger and less affluent people). Focusing on it is an easy way to ignore good points and good criticism that most of these protesters are focusing on, so I’d encourage you to separate most of the protesters from the very few bad actors.
