Without getting into a very, very long semantic discussion, art is one person’s (or many people’s) interpretation of reality. You’re allowed to disagree with that interpretation–and not like a work of art–without being an idiot.
I’m still holding out for the local school to do The Rite of Spring, myself. Even better if it were for Christmas.
True, but the value we have placed on certain “great” works of art comes from a common consensus reached by many people. I’ll debate the value of keeping classical music in schools any day. As a music teacher I thoroughly believe children have great qualities they can develop through the study of classical music in school. IMHO the OP is overreacting. His chief argument against it is that it is “old” Well perhaps if the music has lasted this long, it has a strong quality to it.
And for anyone who still thinks it stinks…I know I’m satisified with my position. You don’t know what your missing.
So when you were in high school were you cut from the ballet troupe? Were you a member but just couldn’t get them to do the production you wanted? I’m trying to figure out where the bitterness on this one is coming from.
Jeez, it’s a HS show of a classic. Is life really going so well that this pisses you off?
Maybe he has a kid or relative that’s in it and has to go?
I’d gladly sit through the Nutcracker rather than listen to 30 second graders play Jingle Bells on the recorder. I keep looking at the calender wondering how many days I have left before my eardrums are punctured.
Where’s he saying it should be taken out of public schools? He’s just saying he doesn’t like The Nutcracker.
If you like it, dandy. So do I. However, I’m sure ralph is fully aware of what he’s missing–he just doesn’t like it.
“Now, my local HS is putting it on!”
I assume he means High School, though maybe I’m wrong. And by that I took it he didn’t care for schools using it in a production. Perhaps I am filling in blanks, but thats what it looked like to me.
Hey, if you’d ever had your nuts cracked, you’d be a little more sympathetic!
I saw the Joffrey Ballet’s Nutcracker last year. Hell,I’m Jewish and I love the Nutcracker. The music alone is so wonderful…and I’m like a little girl all over again, watching the ballerinas in their beautiful costumes.
OTOH, watching kids dance it can be dreary. Is someone forcing you to go or something?
ralph was hoping for an Xmas-themed version of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Apropos of absolutely nothing, I just saw Santa Claus staggering out of our emergency department here at the hospital. A perfect Santa - white hair, beard, rotund figure. The grey sweats were a bit jarring, though. :dubious:
My 4 year old daughter was a mouse and a bon-bon this year in the local junior ballet’s Nutcracker. You’ve got something against little girls who like to dance? Have you no shame, sir?
An interesting plot twist: the sacrificial maiden dances herself to death to assure the success of the basketball team.
I absolutely adore The Nutcracker. I love the music, the dance, the story, the whole kit and kaboodle. It’s a tradition for my Mother and I to go see it every year at the Papermill Playhouse in NJ. I even own a production of it on VHS (that is almost worn out since I don’t confine my viewings to Christmastime). Of course, I absolutely adore most ballet, so take my opinion for what it’s worth.
But, really ralph124c, if you really dislike it that much, don’t go. I’m sure you can find a way to wiggle out of it (or, if you’ll be hurting someone’s feelings by ditching, then show some proper Christmas Spirit and suck it up )
It was all a dream. Clara wakes up to find the Nutcracker in the shower.
That’s no nutcracker, it’s a Crazy White Guy!
