Whaddya want? Unlike Dems who need more than a majority because they openly disagree with each other, Pubs close ranks. It’s just that the portions of the party that aren’t Gods Guns and Gays didn’t want to go down as teh stupid and started to speak up, bravely. Disagreeing with the Palin pick got one tarred as a traitor, but once they got press those in agreement got louder. A cursory look at poll data seems to indicate many GOP voters just stayed home. I haven’t seen a breakdown yet, but I suspect every one of Gov. Palin’s rooters cast their vote. Whether she’s under the bus depends on the sort of woodshedding that gets undertaken. Polarising does not mean unpopular, and many a candidate has returned from defeat. ---

This is making sure that Palin can never move beyond her base in a national election - feeding her a poison pill. If people made a point of Al Gore and the “invented the internet” meme - I have a hard time believing anyone but her hardcore fans is going to vote for someone who purportedly can’t answer questions my third grader just answered (and then said “Mom, why are you asking me stupid questions”). ---

It’s really something I’m only just grasping, the almost total venality of Sarah Palin. It’s on par with the Bush appointee who had to resign because he was caught shoplifting from Target. I’m not someone who thinks that government officials should be like gods among men, but I really think they should be people who are actually above that sort of thing. ---

I don’t know if I articulated that well, actually. From the beginning, I saw the Palin pick as an attempt to try to grab the Clinton supporters out from under the Democratic party. And I saw it as incredibly cynical and pretty insulting to those Clinton supporters (“any dame’ll do”). And as time went on and we realized just how completely uninformed Palin was, I recognized that she was a joke of a candidate to anyone who wasn’t wholeheartedly swimming in the Kool-Aid. But there’s more to it than that…it’s not about her intelligence or her gender or her ability to keep male right-wing pundits from standing up. She’s just…bargain-basement. She’s rummage sale. She’s downscale. The whole feud with her estranged brother-in-law was just so Jerry Springer. She’s banal. That’s what bothers me. She’s so incredibly banal. I’m not an elitist, but I do think that there should be at least a certain minimum degree of dignity involved in pursuing public office. It’s not an economic class thing, it’s a personal demeanor thing. I mean, I love my family, but I definitely wouldn’t want to see most of them in office (especially my dad’s side!). The Obamas outclass the Palins by light-years. That’s one of the major differences, I think. ---
