**Elucidator** , have I mentioned lately that you rock? I don’t necessarily mean that in reference to your OP rant (a fine piece of work nonetheless) but rather to your other posts in the inspiration for this thread. Although I definitely agree with much of what you were saying, you have to admit, something good has to be said for good leadership in general. After all, how far would Le Resistance get without it? 😉 And **Scylla** , forgive me for interjecting, but I don’t think **Elucidator** was trying to joke around _with_ you, as much as he was trying to insult you further. Just my take on it. ---

Actually, having just read the thread in question, Elucidator is an idiot, but that’s OK, idiots have a right to their opinons as well. He could have saved the bleeding heart " We fought against the war in Vietnam because it was unjust " crap, though. Protests in America dropped to near zero when the draft was ended, it was all self serving bullshit. Nothing wrong with that, but just admit it, you didn’t want to fight and die for non defined goals. Fine, I wouldn’t either, but this imaginary “higher purpose” that y’all have shouted to the clouds ever sense smells like a fish three weeks out of water to anyone who has bothered to study the facts. ---

I’m sure I speak for many other Dopers when I say I would sooner gnaw off my left arm than get into a pissing match with Collounsbury. I don’t think I’d want to be on the “blue” side in a debate over the color of the sky if he was in the other camp. Besides, who can the wherewithall a pit thread about him? I’d rather spend the energy on getting him to (a) father my children or (b) finish my dissertation. Could you at least come to me defense? My advisor really needs someone to argue with. She sent me an email yesterday telling me that the research questions in my dissertation could not have been the same ones my committee approved when I submitted my proposal “unless they were all drunk at the time.” Thanks for the support, bitch. As for the OP, the acrid dump line was really something. ---

**Wierdave** I’m not about to suggest that our ranks were filled entirely by the righteous and the just. We had our share of assholes, Lord knows. As is often the case, it is the radicals who get the attention they crave, the kind of dolts who insisted on spelling “America” with a “k”. Whose line is it about being perfectly capable of dealing with one’s enemies, Heaven protect me from my allies? Anyone who looks back on those days with dewy nostalgia is a dolt. Myself, I wouldn’t live those days over if I could do it rich and good-lookin’. As I said, looking back it seems our efforts were largely wasted, But as Ghandi said, just because your efforts are useless does not relieve you of the responsiblity to make the effort. Who were the heroes? John Kerry and his Vietnam Veterans Against the War, many of whom I was proud to call friend. It is a lot harder to hurl epithets like “coward” and “traitor” at a man who’s sleeve is pinned to his shoulder. When they gathered to hurl thier combat medals on the Capitol steps, America gasped. One hundred of them in one hour did more than one hundred thousand of us could accomplish in years. No one has ever served thier country better than they, may the good Lord bless them and keep them. Heroes, in the truest sense of the word. You are aware, are you not, that many VFW clubs in America tried to deny admission to Viet Nam vets? Not the right sort, apparently. Politically unreliable. I can only testify for myself, and a few others. We were sincere, take it for whatever its worth to you. If you ever find yourself forced by conscience to support a wildly unpopular cause, you will know.
