Mange mon shorts, bichon
Well, that answers that question. Since this discussion has really degenerated into pointlessness, I’m going to walk away. I gotta tell you, Elucidator, your behavior is really disappointing for a grown man of 51 years. I’d expect a greater maturity level from someone your age–you act like a petulant child in the majority of your posts. You really need to think about the way you behave in public.

No, I don’t have any specific instances of actual spitting, although posters in this thread have testified to anti-war protesters insulting returning servicemen. In any case, even Snopes would be hard put to conclusively demonstrate that no servicemen were spat upon at any time.
Well, that wouldn’t really be ignoring him, then. That would be responding to him.
“Free society” means that you* are free to choose your representative - be it a U.S. senator, a state congressman, a county judge, or your local trustee. This is as opposed to a monarchy or a dictatorship, where the citizens have little to no say in who governs them.
Each citizen is neither expected nor required to put his seal of approval on each law that is passed, including peace or wartime drafts. That is/was your freely-elected representative’s job. He was your voice. And if he did a piss-poor job voicing your opinion, it is your duty to cast a vote against him next go-round. But in the meantime, you’re stuck following the laws of the land.

It would also be an award-winning imitation of an ostrich.
Nice. Elucidator (or, Halucinator, as I have come to think of him) wants to bitch about Scylla, but when challenged for his own shortcomings, just says “let’s stop this now, I’m tired”. Oh, both Stoid and Elucidator would simply prefer that people they don’t agree with just ignore them. How convenient.
So much for having the strength of your convictions…
You may want to just separate the board into camps of like-minded individuals, so you can all bask in your own glory. Yeah, that would be really interesting.
[[We went to war to keep the South Vietnamese from being overrun by the Communist North, because it was our understanding that communist states, under the leadership of the Soviet Union, had made it their goal to expand and increase their influence over non-communist states, and it was a goal of US foreign policy to contain and drive back Communism, because we understood Soviet style Communism to be oppressive and not to recognize certain human rights. Admittedly, sometimes our allies were oppressive also, and we weren’t always on the side of the angels, but fundimentally, the anti-communist movement was about protecting freedom from the communists who would take it away.]]
The U.S. has in the past been known for supporting maniacal leaders, some of whom committed genocide against their own people, as long as they weren’t “communists.” Oh, and where were we when Tibet was overrun? Sorry, I don’t buy it that the U.S. motive has been to “protect freedom.” Do you know how women are treated in Saudi Arabia? Oh wait, they have oil…
Etc.
A note from someone who was there in those times, for what little it’s worth.
Most all men of that generation faced some difficult choices.
Unless you too have faced that choice in your own life I don’t think you have a right to criticize.
This is especially true of those that have come after, you don’t understand the times and the circumstances.
For those of you that had direct losses, this in no way denigrates or diminishes your pain but taking it out on others that don’t share your views is not the answer either.
I’m closing this thread. Don’t fight like this again on this subject on this board.

Vietnam will be over someday but I doubt I’ll live to see it.
