SD Job-Seekers' Support Group

In addition to playing a few too many games of Scrabble today, I also did the final final version of the resume, having heard back from my Advisory Group over the weekend. Sent it out to the main possibility – a magazine publishing group that does publications on upscale spas, jacuzzis, pools, etc. IOW, consumer-oriented and outdoor living – so some connection with a gardening magazine, eh?

Heard back from them about five hours later – my interview is Weds. morning. Anyone who’s got any fingers as yet uncrossed, pls. cross them!

Woohoo! An interview that quickly can’t be a bad thing!

Sending lucky thoughts your way.

That third fear would be??? lol Sorry, just had to ask.

Well, had the interview this morning – and it was equally clear to both of us that there wasn’t a good fit there. Nice to get a practice interview out of the way though!

:frowning: Sorry to hear that! Good luck with the next one.

The contract I was on ended three weeks before my wedding. Now that the wedding and honeymoon are over with, it’s time to get serious. My resume has been up to date for a while, and I have a new one with my new name and contact information on it; now it’s just a matter of finding something. The agency who gave me the last contract may have something; I’m just waiting to hear back from them. Meanwhile, I still have things to move and things to organize here.

twickster and the rest of you here, you’ve got my sympathies. I also hate job hunting and the fear that comes with being unemployed.

The Sonoran Lizard King has an interview.

Congratulations! Good luck!

Still waiting…I just followed up with the biotech company I’m waiting to hear back from, and they’ve managed to contact two of my references and are still trying to reach the third. It’s definitely a good sign that they’re actually checking references, but I am getting really tired of waiting!

My unexpected interview the other day went all right. I’m not really that excited about that particular job and I suspect I’d be bored out of my mind in fairly short order, but hopefully the other one will come through and I won’t even need to worry about this one.

OK, just talked to the recruiter who hooked me up for the job interview. Now it is possible that he was just trying to help me not feel bad for not getting the position, but the things he told me about the company make me glad I did not get the position. Indeed, some of the things he told me helped clear up why I didn’t get the position.

The main one: One of Khadaji’s rules - I will not accept responsibility without being given authority. I have been in too many management roles where I didn’t get full authority. So now I make it clear that I expect it. (doesn’t always matter, but I at least put it out there in the interview.) According to the recruiter, the CEO is a micro-manager and he probably was not thrilled with this rule.

My only question: Why didn’t I hear these things BEFORE I applied?

Thanks, Khadaji.

On the second job front, things are interesting. The telemarketers sent me home until saturday, part of the office politics and who has the power to schedule, decide what, etc. I’ll have to ask one of the owners, pointedly, if they can give me the shift I need, or not. They’re a skeezy crew, drug abuse, fistfights in the office, loan sharks / coke dealers showing up to ask for this owner (5% owner) I need to deal with. He was inventing conversations I never had with him about not showing up. I said I didn’t know when, not ‘no.’ But he had to be all alpha about it. I’ve got more electronic feelers out, but I’ve never had anything ever come of online job searching, so I don’t put much truck in it, yet. Got a TBNT letter from the city job I was up for. That would have been nice.

Just as an update: I had five or six interviews this week… Wooo! No call backs for orientations or anything like that yet. I’m keeping up the hope, though!

Plus side to this week: I might have a possible new boyfriend (had a lovely date tonight that went great!).

I heard back from my agency. Even though the job looked like a perfect fit for my skills, I didn’t make the short list for the job. I suspect subconciously I’d been counting on this job coming through. Instead, I wound up somewhat nastily depressed.

Oh well, time to buckle down, go through the ads, and act like a real unemployed person. I just keep getting a little scared because I remember last time I was unemployed I was out of work for 7 months. It’s not time to start looking for clerical work yet.

(Totally off subject, but contrats on the wedding! Pics? I’m very happy for you.)

Due to the tax rebate and my royalty checks, I’m actually ok for a little while. However, I have a job interview on the 19th. It’s at the University’s Natural History Museum. This job sounds perfect for me in many ways, and I’m very excited about the interview. But not too excited, because I don’t have an education degree (though I have been working as a teacher/tutor/instructor for the past 7 years) or a broad knowledge of natural history (though I do read a lot about it, and would love to have reason to read more. A part of me always wanted to go that direction instead of towards literature).

Hopefully I won’t be full of suck at the interview.

Oh, and the job is 5 mins away from my house and on the same bus route my husband uses, so I’d save on gas and stuff. University employees are given free bus passes.

crosses fingers for pepperlandgirl

Hey, good luck to everyone with upcoming interviews. I want to hear more about **Her Royal **** IMFness’s ** new Boyfriend. (Nobless Oblige.)

Well, telemarketing is off the stove for now. The cokehead flake didn’t even show. The manager apologized and told me straight up there were substance problems and conflicts between the owners. One owner up above any I’d heard of before was now involved. Upshot is they can’t accomodate my variable schedule for now, but they have my contact info, and they may send me a check for $24 to cover the time and gas I’ve put in. All friendly, like.

Too bad, so sad.

God, sounds exactly like a mail-order record company I managed a phone room for in the 80’s. I eventually got let go because I took exception to one of the owners using the n-word to describe some of my co-workers. Plus ca change, plus ca la meme chose.

Woo hoo! The biotech company called this morning to make an offer! I’m waiting to get it in writing and see if there are any details that need clarification, but it sounds good, and I’m planning on accepting unless there are any major issues that they forgot to mention on the phone.

Woohoo! Congratulations. Wishing you luck and joy in your new career.

Way to go, Ms. MacPhisto. Right on.

Er. I mean Congratulations.
