# SD on PBS on VHF in DC & LA

What is the Straight Dope with the fact in large TV markets except DC and LA, PBS had a VHF channel reserved for it.

How did LA and DC get this?

At the time channels were assigned to cities most larger markets had one VHF channel reserved for Public (though not necessarily PBS) use.
