I’m also curious, I really have no idea: But are only prosecuted murders factored in from other countries? Rapes, theft, etc.? Other countries are run by vastly different governments, and crimes might not be enforced very efficiently, let alone brought to justice. Could be oppression keeping citizen in check by outright fear of capital punishment for even what we would consider petty crimes. Or poverty stricken countries, there’s not many to steal from when everyone’s poor. Some probably don’t even have a penal system or adequate prisons. Too many variables to draw any conclusions from a few aspects of data, in which comparisons might be apples and oranges anyway. ---

Statistics on murder rates are the best way to evaluate the entire rate of crime, or at least violent crime, because murders are most likely to come to the attention of the police. There is a body that shows trauma, or a disappearance under suspicious circumstances. ---

Also what kind of homicides are we talking here? 1st degree, 2nd, voluntary manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter? Different countries have different laws and mitigating circumstances, which could drastically color the data when compared to the US. ---

Disappearances don’t come back murders, only bodies do - missing persons are assumed to have hopped a bus until further notice. Bodies only show up when the police is down with finding them in the first place. And if the police decides that a body is no murder, then it’s not. Even if it was. Some just come up suicide, you know ? Or accidentally fell down an elevator shaft. Onto some bullets. Bottomline: murder stats are no better way to “evaluate the entire rate of crime” than any other police stat, and certainly no more reliable. If the government body making the stats is bent, the stats are gonna get bent too. If there’s pressure from the local authority to massage the stats for PR or electoral purposes, the stats are going to get massaged. And it gets more complicated when you realize than not all countries judge all deaths the same way… ---

I am reminded of the fact the troll **Brazil84** (who will likely make a accusation against me based on lies he can’t cite) used to get in very long threads in GD where he’d post complete bullshit, claiming anthropomorphic global warming wasn’t true. The threads consisted of him arguing with pretty much the whole rest of the forum telling him what a wrong idiot he is. So either posters secretly fear global warming isn’t true, or you’re full of bullshit **New Deal Democrat**. ---

David Brooks, the civilized conservative columnist for The New York Times once wrote, “Global warming is real. Most conservatives privately realize this.” The right wing denial of global warming is similar to the left wing denial of the importance of genetics in human affairs. The implication of global warming is that major restrictions on economic growth and private private property rights are necessary. The data supports global warming. The data does not support innate genetics differences that lead to measurable traits in races. In addition, even if it did, trends within a race are not determinative to the individual. ---
