SDMB Blocked at work.

It sounds good in theory, but then so did communism.

Any IT folks out there care to comment on this approach?

For me, it smacks to much of “I’m going to really subvert the rules, not just look for an alternate link that the filter doesn’t object to”.

YMMV, of course.

Well once again I can tell you that logmein.com would be barred by SurfControl as a member of the category **Proxies & Translators **. However it seems that even the Government in the US doesn’t use efficient US software to control their systems so this may work too.

I’ve said it in other threads and I’ll say it again; circumventing restrictions set up by IT departments is a good way to get fired (or at least get in serious doo-doo) in many organizations. It’s much better to simply make a case for exempting SDMB (or whatever else you want to get at that is being blocked).

I don’t visit the SDMB at work. It’s against the rules. And while I don’t really love my job, I do like the pay rate and the flexible hours.

Old axiom, if you can’t beat them, join them. I am in IT and by some miracle the normally blocked Playsite.com is opened up between 11:30 and 12:00 noon. And only for two specific work stations. By mere chance that is my lunch break when I play gin with another tech. By policy it is a violation but try as I might, I have never been able to catch myself. Seems I am always on lunch break when the violation of policy occurs. In fairness this IT department has never caught anybody officially, a “hey buddy, you been noticed, knock it off” has been the approach. It works for us, except in one case of someone misusing Playsite.com, got to put more effort into tracking that miscreant down…

Where I work the dope was blocked by websense because it was considered online chat. hen the block was lifted and now it is blocked again

That sucks. You need to get a government job.

Websense is also what they use here at my job, but I suspect it was merely based on the fact that the word “boards” was in the website address. Using the IP in lieu of “boards.straightdope.com” seems to work fine.
