I’m indifferent to the inside jokes mentioned in the OP, and I suspect I’ll be equally indifferent to most of the replies to this thread. That said, I can’t let a thread like this pass without taking the opportunity to mention the one and only feature I abhor that is inherent (solely, in my experience) to this board. I don’t know that it qualifies as a “meme”, but: The :rolleyes: smiley must _DIE_. Message board posters in general are sufficiently skilled at conveying the message “I am being a smug, self-superior jackhole” without the added benefit of a visual aid. Since the first day I joined these boards, I have loathed that thing with every fiber of my being that I can bring myself to dedicate to loathing a vBulletin smiley, which is not that many fibers all told, but the point still stands. Kill it. Kill it now. ---

Definitely IANAL. It just looks icky. Maybe not a SDMS meme per-se, but every time I see it I think, “Oh, that person enjoys it up the butt”. Oh, and I still have no idea why “1920’s style Death Ray” pops up every so often. ---

They give the place its own style; even the annoying memes. I admit that the smilies are a bit annoying. The 1920’s style death ray seems to have died a natural death. Same with “once, for 20 minutes…” though that pops up if the Marianas trench comes up in some discussion. ---

I don’t think the word meme is particular to the SDMB. I’m not sure why you’d want to do away with it though, it’s a very useful word. SDMB Words And Phrases That Are Passed On, Which People Always Say, is a bit of a mouthful. ---
