Hi, Opal is based on a rant by Opalcat many moons ago, in which she expressed her ire at people who made two-entry lists, which don’t need to be lists and should instead just be listed in-line as text. So, people began going
1. Blah
2. More blah
3. Hi, Opal!
It got out of hand when people began going
1. Blah
2. More blah
3. Hi, Opal!
4. Even more blah
pointedly ignoring the fact that they could have just made a legitimate list of
1. Blah
2. More blah
3. Even more blah

1. Once, in 1960, for 20 minutes.
2. The Marianas Trench.

The whole “Hi, Opal” thing is lame not just because it’s so overdone and played out, but because that persson doesn’t even post on the board anymore. It sounds like she was a big figure like _ten years ago_, but has since left for greener pastures.

Ummmm… **Opalcat** ’s last activity on the SDMB was 10/21/2005. Ten years ago? It wasn’t even ten _days_ ago!

Since we’re on the subject, what about “my head a’splode(s)” (the spelling / punctuation of a’splode varies wildly).
I’ve seen a bunch of places, and I’ve got a sneaking suspicion it’s from Strongbad (a font of internet memes), but I’ve always been curious to see confirmation.
