Longtime members of this board will remember the story circulating in the early 2000s about the woman named Carole (probably an assumed name) who wanted to be a DBE (double below-elbow) amputee and wanted to wear Dorrance #5 stainless steel hooks. Whilst perusing YouTube earlier tonight, I found a video from [Debunk File](https://youtu.be/MHu0_mj9UvY?si=eUT1wR26CVrqSYS2) from about 6 months ago that did a deep dive into discovering the identity of the woman involved. And they reference (about halfway through the 30 minute video) the SDMB, and actually include a screenshot of the thread started by @Earthworm_Jim that includes a response from our own @Biggirl. According to what the internet sleuth discovered, the operation never actually happened. Anyway, the SDMB got a shoutout in that video. ---

I have a similar but opposite desire. I want to keep my real hands and feet but acquire a DORRANCE #5 STAINLESS STEEL head and torso. ---

Yeah, but I posted that at around 2:30 am, and I didn’t want to wake anyone up by yelling. @LSLGuy , the video’s creator has discovered through his detective work that the person known as Carole studied English in college, and is a writer. They have written other stories about this. Some of the finer details seem to contradict each other, and a few other things strain credulity. His conclusion is that this was most likely creative writing. At the very least, since there’s no indication that the surgery was ever performed, he thinks that wishful thinking. He doesn’t rule out the possibility (and this is pretty disturbing, and something I’d never considered) that Carole’s fiancée had a thing for amputees, and was grooming her to become one. The video’s creator mentions that the fiancée was engaged before, and that his previous fiancée was also a DBE, and she also just happened to use DORRANCE #5 STAINLESS STEEL HOOKS. So, TL, DR version: most likely made-up as a creative writing project, but can’t rule out that her fiancée was grooming her to want to be a DBE. As a side note, the YouTube comments are hilarious. My favorite one came from someone who would be right at home on the SDMB, and says, “be hilarious if they gave her Dorrance #4 stainless steel hooks.”.” ---
