# SDMB Porn?

I’ve noticed a recent phenomenon: Whenever I’m on the SDMB, I get some kind of porn spam. Anyone else notice this?
The spam used to just be in my mailbox when I signed on; now, it seems to wait for me to come here. Then, within 10 minutes, I’ll get “Barely Legal Teens XXX!” or something of that nature in my box. I haven’t noticed it happening when I’m at another web site, BTW.
Ideas as to the whys? Could be just coincidence, but it’s been happening like this for several weeks now.

Nope, no problem here. I have an e-mail thru Netscape Communicator, and I NEVER get porn spam there; I do get it on my MSN hotmail account, but can’t correlate it to SDMB.

I started a thread in GQ about this very same thing. It’s called “Why do I keep getting porn email?” The same thing happens to me.

I think you’re right about the porn thing, becuase I just added a new email address and the first email I recieved was for “PAM FUCK FLIXXX”- but I hadn’t done much surfing, other than the SDMB and a couple other websites. Spam really doesn’t bother me, because I can usually figure out if the email is from someone i know or not and it takes a few seconds to delete it.

I access SDMB through a few different ISPs and haven’t gotten ant porn spam. But I don’t I access SDMB through a few different ISPs and haven’t gotten any porn spam. Both LauraRae & Cristi have their e-mail addresses available and both are on AOL.
Hmmm…, time for a little experiment here. I use AOL, so I think I’ll temporarily modify my profile to reveal my e-mail address and come here via AOL.

The suggestion that they’re getting our Email addresses off the SDMB makes sense, _except_ that up until yesterday, my main screenname (the one getting all the porn spam) was NOT the address listed in my profile.
By that line of thinking, my Muhcavity (secondary account listed for months here in my profile) address should’ve been filled to overflowing with all the spam. Yet, I don’t think I have ever received a single porn-related spamming there. It’s all HERE, and it’s annoying as hell.
One tip I’ve learned–if it’s spam from an AOL user trying to pass themselves off as someone who knows me, I click on “Status.” If there’s dozens of other names there–usually in alphabetical order–then wha-la, mystery solved. I know I could just open it, but I hate being tricked into that–I prefer them seeing (deleted) after my name when THEY check status.
Maybe it’s just all coincidence, but I’ve been porn-spammed to death in the last month or so, and I haven’t visited any suspicious sites. Maybe my “Oral Sex Techniques” thread is coming back to haunt me… 😮

I’ve been getting quite a bit of porn spam too lately through my Hotmail account. They used to be really good about filtering out the junk, but ever since Microsoft took over Hotmail, it seems all I get anymore is spam. I think I’m going to start using one of my other e-mail accounts.

Not exactly an exhaustive test, but I gave it an hour, w/a few logons/logoffs, and haven’t seen anything.

I use Yahoo mail, and I don’t have a problem with porn spam (I get very little). My address is listed here, plain as day.
When I do get unsolicited mail, Yahoo mail has a feature- you open the mail, then choose “block address”. You will never get another mail from that person again. It’s a really easy feature to use (two steps) and it’s really cut down on my spam.

Is it the ISP you use or the e mail you list on the profile? If it’s the ISP. how would they know your e mail address, even if you have one thru that ISP? We use Compuserve, and I don’t use that for e mail, so no data here…
