LOLs – the blessed absence of LOLs… When I first discovered the SDMB, I couldn’t believe my luck – post after post and nary a “LOL!” did I see. No amount of wit and erudition could have converted me more effectively. On every other message board I know, people pepper their posts with this stupid acromym, usually followed by a string of exclamation marks. Why do I find it so infuriating? Partly because I get an instant mental image of eyes lolling out of sockets, and lolling tongues. And also because “LOL!!!” seems to be saying: “Look at me, I’m so cute and I’ve got such a lovely sense of humour!”. When I was new to the net, someone told me it meant “Lots of Love” , which left me somewhat surprised at the number of posters loving each other up… I’ve no idea whether Dopers’ admirable avoidance of LOL follows an edict from on high, or whether it’s a mutual thing, but anyway, this is to say thanks for your discrimination and style. And yes, I know what’s going to happen if anyone replies to this, but still, thanks. ---
