SDMB Weight Loss Thread: January Version

I think that’s sort of done in the Hi All thread in the SDMB SP team. We can do it here, too…mine’s easy, I’m the same in both places.

Good karma, here I come!

I weighed myself this morning and I’ve lost another 3 lbs., for a total of 5 lbs. this week. I’m almost to the point where I can stop focusing on the weight and start focusing way more on the muscle.

I went for a swim for the first time yesterday (hubby is a triathlete, so he was introducing me to proper technique) and I loved it. We’re going to go a couple of times a week now.

I broke down and made cookies this week. Aargh. But damn, they were good, and I took 1/3 to work, put 1/3 (unbaked) in the freezer, and we ate the rest.

I’m afraid to weight myself until Monday morning, but I’ll be out exercising all weekend and if I keep busy I won’t snack. Besides, there’s very little to snack on here but air-popped popcorn anyway.

I’m hesitant to join something like SP b/c of the calorie counting nuances, although I admit I haven’t checked it out. How easy is it to put in homemade meals? Since it’s winter, we’re eating a lot of homemade green chili, elk chili, black bean chili, etc. In fact, we don’t eat processed food at all, really.

I’ve still got 5-7 lbs to go, as I gained back what I lost when I was sick. I haven’t done any weight training since then, either.

SparkPeople has a sister site, SparkRecipes.com. You can browse recipes there (I made Slow Cooker Chicken Taco Stew and it was delicious) and you can put in your ingredients for your homemade meals. There’s a bit of double entry involved, since you put in your ingredients once so SP can calculate the nutrition, then you have to list them again for the recipe section, but overall it works fine, and you can get a good idea of just how healthy Grandma’s meatloaf is.

Well, I was supposed to spend the day downhill skiing today in upstate New York with a couple of new friends. But I got really sick (again) last night. So much for getting some exercise. :frowning:

Ick, olives. Any sign of getting that GI yet?

Yeah I already saw him. More tests! sigh

It’s the end of my first week and I’ve lost 2lb. As long as the numbers keep going in the right direction I’ll be happy.

New Years’ Day had me at 172. This morning I was 170. That could be a number of things, including my monthly visitor and water retention, but TWO pounds? Whatever. I was 170 on New Years’ Eve, so I’ll see about next week.

Okay, I’ve joined in on the SparkPeople group too!

Why are the last 5-7 pounds so freaking impossible!?!?!

You probably don’t want to hear this. I started at 200 lbs in July 2004. I reached 140 lbs in February 2005. I didn’t reach my final weight of 127 lbs until November 2005. 6 months to lose 60 lbs, 8 months to lose 13 lbs. I hope it goes better for you!

I saw…welcome!

Don’t get so down on yourself…look back and see how much you lost already!

Glory, that’s fantastic! I’m always in awe at those folks who lose the equivalent of a whole 'nuther person. That takes work and discipline, and I always want to grab the whiners who shovel brownies in their mouth and complain about their genes that no, it can be done!

Today make exactly one week since I joined SparkPeople.

I’m only going to weigh myself every four weeks, but I can tell I’ve lost a little.

My body feels different. I feel different.

This is something I can do!

I’m completely and utter in the same place. Except I’m slacking. Looks like I can maintain at 123, but if I want to be at 115-7, I’ve got to get back in the weight room.

You all are an inspiration, and keep me honest about what I’m actually doing or not doing.

You go! You can do it!

I weighed myself every two weeks. It was like getting a present every time I stepped on the scale.

You feel different because you are learning YOU are in control, not the food. It’s great, isn’t it?

OK, one week in, three pounds down to 185! (I ditched the new scale because I could change the weight it showed by 10 pounds by shifting my weight slightly from ball of my foot to heel - so even if the old scale isn’t very accurate, at least it is consistent and shows if I’m headed in the right direction.) I know it’ll slow down once my body gets over the shock of eating more good stuff and actually - GASP - exercising, but this early success is good for me.

I have a few perfectionist tendencies, so tracking my goals in SparkPeople is really helping me stay on track. I don’t want to leave those boxes unchecked and meals empty!

Does anyone have some ideas for interesting high-fiber foods? I’m eating lots of raw fruits and vegetables and mini-wheat cereal, but I tend to get bored with foods quickly and will need to switch it up soon. It’s a tough time for fruit right now, so it’s mostly apples, bananas, and grapes. Raw veggies are tending toward carrots, snow peas, and snap peas.

It’s actually giving me a feeling of control over my whole life this past week. Work is really crappy right now - but to meet my goal of walking every day, I make myself get up from my desk and walk the tunnels of our complex instead of working through my lunch. Instead of spending my energy being frustrated and angry about the work crap, I’ve gone to the gym and devoured info on how to improve my health. It’s reminding me what is important in my life, and what is not.
