SDMB Weight Loss Thread: May

Seconding Sparkpeople. (It’s a race, I think, between Ivylass and I who mentions it first- you win this time, Ivylass!) I’ve been using it for a year and I’m down 85 pounds. I am not fat for the first time in over 10 years! I still need to lose about 25 pounds. But I’m relaxing my expectations. I’m sticking to calorie counting and running/working out, but I know that the last 25, which would bring me down to 123, will probably take another year. Doesn’t matter. I look just fine.

Well, I didn’t say they were skinny . . . they’re just less fat. :stuck_out_tongue:

Less fat counts.

Howdy folks. Wanted to , ahem, weigh in here.
I found out I had diabeted in January. Since February I have been on an Atkins-style low carb diet. I just got my 3 mo. blood work back.

Weight
210 to 182

A1C
8.5 to 5.6

Total cholesterol
147

HDL
30

Triglycerides
over 300 to 150

I have also been running, lifting weights and doing the wii Fit.

Let me say this as loudly as possible…

IF YOU HAVE WEIGHT AROUND YOUR MIDDLE, LOW ENERGY, ARE HUNGRY ALL THE TIME…GET TESTED FOR DIABETES!!!

Finding I had it has been the best thing ever for my health. It has given me focus and with the changes I have made I feel great! No more lack of energy. Not hungry all the time. I am back in control.

Get tested.

That is all.

So I went to see my doctor yesterday about my shin splints. Here I’ve been trying to walk and run for a couple months now, in great pain, thinking that if I just keep doing it, it’ll get better. But it never did get better. Apparently, I have flat feet and need orthotics! So he told me to go to Summit Hut, a camping/hiking store, for “Superfeet” orthotics, cheap and mass-produced. I bought some but haven’t tried them yet. But the thought of being able to walk and run without pain would be a bold new concept for me, and I can’t wait to try it when the sun goes down and it’s not 105 out. If this works, OMG, I’m going to walk and run so much it’ll make your head spin!

I really fell off the weight loss wagon in March and April, mostly due to having a houseguest here that I felt embarrassed about exercising in front of. I know, I know. Anyway, he’s long gone now and I’m getting back on the horse. Today I did my Turbo Jam video for the first time since March, and I’m back to logging all of my food in SparkPeople. Unfortunately I think I gained back most of what I lost in January and February, but that’s OK, I’ll get there again. No more houseguests!

Can I brag?

Ivylad bought me some new clothes for Mother’s Day.

The jeans are a size 4.

Have I mentioned how much I love Sparkpeople?

I hit my 5% goal and then some at last week’s Tuesday meeting (5% = 11 lbs.; I was down 12.6). Yay! Two people also told me I was looking thinner (though both of them had probably last seen me at the same weight on my way UP the scale :stuck_out_tongue: ). And Thursday night we went out, and I wore another pair of “skinny” (less fat) jeans and a top that shows my waist and hides my tummy. The tape measure showed inches lost here and there as well from only a week and a half ago. And I’m down 2 BMIs from when I started!

Dunno about tomorrow’s weigh-in; this has been a stressful week, and though I tracked points and (I think) stayed within my limits, I wasn’t as religious about it as usual and didn’t make the best choices (fewer veggies, more snackies). Went to Fazoli’s one night (wasn’t my choice; I was with a group) and chose poorly: a 20-point pasta dish! Good thing I only ate half of it. I HAVE to remember to get the cheese pizza or something with tomato sauce when dining out at Italian-type places!!

But no matter what the scale says tomorrow, I’ll just allow last week to be in the past and start fresh. I was given a huge bag of raw cauliflower and broccoli left over from a gathering, and have been steaming that up and noshing on it the past few days. Yum. And I signed up for walking the half marathon. (I mentioned my misgivings at the last meeting, and the leader said to go for it: “They’re not gonna shoot you if you don’t finish!” ) Hope my arthritic toe behaves.

Oh, and ivylass: Skinny bitch. :p:p:p

I’m a 20 year old college student and I went to the doctor last Monday for my yearly female exam. I weighed in at 220 pounds. My doctor told me that I am perfectly healthy except that I am way overweight. I almost cried. She was very frank with me.

I joined Weight Watchers a week ago for the first time. This is the first time I have really thought about what I ate except when I quit drinking pop. This morning, I weighed in at 212. I love the little wins.

I’m finding the exercise difficult though. I have a bit of a bum knee and it has made me hate exercise. It’ll be easier when the pools open. I swear I was a fish in a past life.

You go, girl!

You can always start with a little bit of weight training; exercise doesn’t have to be heavy sweating cardio. And even 10 minutes of walking a day is better than 10 minutes sitting on your ass.

I have totally fallen off the exercise bandwagon… We went away for a week at the beginning of May (and walked our butts off sightseeing!) but it ruined my habit of working out during the day. I am going to get back to it.
My weight loss stalled a bit over our trip as we were eating out three meals a day but I have started dropping again now and am currently at 64.4kg (142 lb). I am aiming for between 55 and 57 kg (120 - 125 lb) and am hoping to get there by the end of the summer.

Why, thank you very much!! And look at you, buying smaller clothes!!

Since the end of March I’ve lost 17 lbs – going from 201 to 184. All this was prompted by feeling totally unhealthy and then having that confirmed by being diagnosed with diabetes, and some elevated blood pressure on the side. I’d already started to change my diet prior to being diagnosed, adopting Mark Bittman’s vegan-before-six plan. That resulted in some pretty immediate loss, but now I’ve gone full-bore on eating whole grains, vegetables, fruit, lean proteins, etc., and feel great.

As far as exercise, I’m on week 3 of Couch to 5K and love it. And believe me, I’ve never been a runner; in fact, I hated it in high school and hadn’t run since. I’m running my first 5K at the end of June, and am planning to do another in August. My husband got me into running with the promise of new clothes and shoes – these running shoes are the most comfortable things I’ve ever put on my feet.

So far, my blood pressure is down a lot (used to be about 140/100; yesterday’s reading was 117/78) and my glucose has also dropped. I want it to be lower, and we’re working on that.

Did Turbo Jam 20-minute workout again today and had a reasonably low-fat low-cal lunch. Was not tempted by Whatsit the Youngest’s leftover PB&J, not even for a minute.
