Well, I had to get it ordered in specially, but I got it. I’m told I should have my white wines chilled, so this one has been in the fridge for a day. Let me give you my first impresswions:
Christopher: Gee I think I’ll try this wine I have, my brother-in-law suggests it’s a good white for people that don’t ordinarily drink white.
Grabs, corkscrew. Screw, crew screw…
Christopher: This seems to be going in kind of funny.
Just sampled our first bottle of the 2006 Kim Crawford Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc tonight. Paired it up with a dinner of grilled mahi mahi w/orange-cilantro-red onion salsa
I had it residing in the frig since picking it up yesterday afternoon ($12.59 at Spec’s in Houston). I didn’t think to take it out a little before dinner, so initially it might have been a little too chilled. The twist off caps still seem out of place to me (maybe they take me back to the early 70’s, my misspent youth and far too many bottles of Boones Farm…)
I find this selection to be pleasant with a lively fresh & clean splash of flavor. Tart but not overly so. There’s a definite fruitiness with maybe a slight grassy tone.
Not sure that it will become a regular offering at out place (few whites are) but I do find it enjoyable and am glad to have sampled one of New Zealand’s offerings.
White wines are such alien territory to me that I think I really enjoy the good ones. From now on I will definitely focus on Sauvingion Blanc’s from the Marlborough valley in New Zealand. This will make my Kiwi wife very happy I’m sure.
This is a very nice wine. Fruity, but dry. None of the astringent tannins that I have become used to with wine. I would say low acidity. Very pleasant.
After reading the reviews here, I am wondering if I just managaed to buy a bad bottle of this wine. I chilled it overnight and poured a glass after leaving it open for half an hour or so. The scent was of pears, with a strong element that i could not identify. The taste had the pears that I picked up in the scent, but the other strong element was very sour and reminded me of grapefruit. I found the combination very unpleasant. Remembering friend psycat’s recommendation, I let it warm for an hour then tried it again. It had the same unpleasant taste.
I could have just picked up a bad bottle, but this has not been one of my favorites here so far.
Back from camping. While I did drink half the bottle while I was out, I can’t say it was under the most ideal conditions for tasting and taking notes. Luckily I only drank half the bottle (and one more hooray for screw caps), so I"m finishing it off now.
I do like this wine and I it’s definitely on my ‘good value’ list.
I pick up a lot of the same aromas and flavors as others did - grapefruit, pineapple, lots of tropical fruits, along with that classic ‘cut grass’ nose. It’s not particularly pronounced in this wine, but there is also some of that ‘cat urine’ aroma popping out every now and then. It’s not pleasing to everyone, but I happen to be a fan of it in small amounts in Sauv Blancs.
It’s definitely a bright, acidic wine, crisp and clean, with a medium long finish. I also picked up a little chalk/minerality at the end.
I nibbled on some goat cheese topped crackers with my second glass. Very nice.
You are on the list, my talented artiste friend. But you’re a ways down, since you joined late. I’m starting a Week Nine thread now. You can find it here.
Sweet, thanks. Since I joined late I just wanted to make sure that the hat hadn’t already been abandoned and collectin’ dust by the time I threw my name into it.
My fiancee and I must’ve had some from the same batch. It had a very strong element that, I must confess, I could only adequately describe as “solvent-like” (because it reminded me of teh smell of my ex’s pink nail polish remover which was supposed to smell like citrus, but really didn’t). We tried again about an hour later while we were sitting in front of the fireplace. We could better taste the fruit flavours and it seemed pretty lush in the respect, but that “odd flavor” persisted strongly. It was as if something went really amiss in the balance between acidity and sugar levels. A review we read online said the finish is “crisp and very dry” and we found the finish to be quite the opposite.
We also guessed that something must have gone wrong in the bottling process and it was a bad bottle.
