A few weeks ago I started a group on Yahoo!'s Football Pickem system for an SDMB league. We had great success with last year’s league and a lot of participants. I was hoping to have a lot of players again this year but I haven’t been doing my job of advertising. So here’s the thread for the league. We have about a dozen pickers so far. We’re picking games using confidence points (you assign a unique point value to each game, if you pick it correctly you add that number of points to your total) to add a little extra challenge over just picking games straight up. No point spread, no odds. **dantheman** started a group for beginners, advertised here. But if you’re interested in a slightly more competitive league, join my group: [Yahoo! I created the league fairly soon after the news came out about Michael Pittman’s proclivities wrt domestic violence, I think. Or at least it was on my mind when I set it up. ---

I know I didn’t win last time. Might have been **Spiritus** , or maybe **The Big Cheese** or someone like that. I think I hung around 8th place all year, although I did win one week. Respectability, that’s all I ask for. ---

And also, to everyone, I set up the league to drop the one lowest score from your total, solely because that’s how we had it last year. I’m okay with the drop lowest score. And don’t worry, it’s not like I’m employed or anything, so I was waiting until today to do my picks. I’m just going to copy them over from the other league and assign confidences. **The Big Cheese** , I look forward to your fourth place finish this year. Don’t tell anyone I can’t spot patterns. And I’m not really in London, that’s just a Diplomacy thing (gaming). Although I was actually in London last weekend, which is sort of ironic. Okay, maybe not ironic, but something like that. ---

Contrary to popular opinion, “Munch” is not derived from my penchent for freaky German artists. I had signed up here at the SDMB about the same time I did over at Pyroto, a wonderful little place now since defunct (Bricker was a mod there for a while). I had signed up as “Connor” in both locations. Being a message board newbie, I had signed up a sockpuppet over at Pyroto, because it was quite handy. I had hastily signed it up, and the first word that came to mind was “Munch”. That lasted about 5 days until I discovered that socks were frowned upon. I had gotten Connor up a bit higher, so I had Connor deleted to rectify my wrong-doing, and took over Munch. I then changed my SDMB name to Munch to be consistent. [/derailment] I’m terrible at pick 'em. I’m even worse with confidence picks. I tell myself at the beginning of the season I’m just going to pick the favorites, and go 1, 2, … 15, 16. Never do. ---

Dang, I thought it might be a nod to Richard Belzer’s character from “Homocide: Life on the Streets”. As for pick’em, I did something like that one year and one several weeks in our pool at work. I’m too arrogant to do that in on-line leagues. And a couple of times last year I think the opposite would have won the week. Wonder if it’s going to be that wacky or more predictable this year? ---
