In fact we delete very little (duplicate posts, spam) as we feel it takes away from the continuity of the boards and accountability of users. You might want to travel on over to **About This Message Board** and read the stickies there. Just to summarize, though, we don’t usually like people posting to old threads as it is very jarring. In many cases, the people participating may no longer be on the boards, or an issue has been dropped, or the thread just doesn’t make much sense anymore. That’s why it’s just better all around to create a new thread and link to the old one. (There are exceptions, such as in **Cafe Society** ). ---

OK, maybe I should post another thread about this, but I’ve always thought that enforcing the zombie rule in GQ and the CCC (and that other column related forum) is a little… odd. Isn’t it better to improve an existing thread than waste space on a new post about a topic that was already covered by making a new thread? Someone searching for information about Chinese billionaires would probably rather see one thread than two, especially since there would be a lot of repeated information (and jokes) in the second thread that they would have to wade through. And yeah, some people aren’t on the board anymore, but that doesn’t mean their information is any less accurate, if it was accurate when it was posted. Would anyone be embarrassed by their words being called back in a thread like that? I don’t think so. I can see plenty of good reasons for enforcing the zombie rule in the other forums, but when it comes to factual questions in the factual question forums, why not just add an appendix instead of wasting bandwidth on a whole nother thread? Also, the boards have been really slow for me for the past two weeks, and I’ve had to abort at least half of my replies to posts because it just wasn’t worth the effort of sitting there waiting for the little bar to fill. Just a report from my corner of the Innernit to flesh out the bandwidth picture. ---
