Great username/post combo. Sounds like a failed business model.

[Yes.](https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/561738/its-no-urban-legend-disney-world-surprisingly-popular-place-people-scatter-their-loved-ones-ashes)

> Disneyland and Disney World’s ash-scattering problem is an open secret among park employees. About once a month, a manager radios for a “HEPA cleanup”—the code that signals that cremated ashes have been brought into the park and a special vacuum (one with a “high-efficiency particulate air,” or HEPA, filter) is required to collect them.
>
> Disney, understandably, takes a strong stand against the practice, saying that anyone who brings human remains onto the property will be kicked out. But mourning guests still find ways to smuggle in ashes, either by hiding them in prescription pill bottles, makeup compacts, or Ziploc baggies.

First time I saw this joke was in old, like _old_, Art Linkletter’s _Kids Say the Darndest Things_ book.

> While it is true that you _can_ scatter ashes in most places, saying so without mentioning that to do so _legally_ requires some form of permission nearly _everywhere_ might lead people to think that they can just go out and scatter Gramps’ cremains anywhere anytime. This is decidedly not true…

Well, you are legally required to get permission of the landowner to do ANYTHING on private land, like… walking on it, unless there is a specific easement. I didn’t really think I had to mention that it’s illegal to trespass on private property and litter it with human cremains.

When my dad was dying, my parents discussed what he wanted done with his remains. His first choice was to have his ashes scattered in his old garden plot, but my parents had sold the house, and they felt it would be awkward to ask the new owners. So they picked a different spot, which didn’t require the permission of strangers who might be freaked out by the request. I mean, no one in the family actually researched the legality of trespassing in the old backyard because… well, it was obviously not appropriate. Some of those ashes are in MY garden, however. Which didn’t require any special permission or permitting.

I’ve never looked into the details of getting permission for state or federal land, but it seems to generally be possible. Most of the places where it’s not allowed are places that would be overly popular, and where either the raw quantity of ashes or the released nutrients could cause problems. I guess “public beaches” are a place where it’s not allowed most likely for the “ick” factor.

Yeah, definitely a place that is too popular. That being said, while Disney is extremely aggressive about cleaning up scattered ashes on their properties, as best as I can tell they do it discreetly, and they don’t tend to prosecute people who do it. Littering private property is obviously a BAD THING TO DO, but it sounds like an awful lot of people “get away” with doing that in the haunted mansion every year.

What is it about the haunted mansion that it’s a popular place to scatter ashes?

999 happy haunts, but they’re looking for one more.

And I have heard of APs being canceled and people getting banned.

My BIL swears his best friend - since dead of diabetes - after his leg was amputated, had it cremated and dumped HIS OWN ashes over the bleacher wall at Wrigley Field (DEFINITELY forbidden), 😃

But also NOT the only ashes ever dumped at Wrigley Field. In the case of Steve Goodman there was even actual permission received to do that.

MrsRico and I didn’t rush back from Guatemala for my mom’s services so a sister threw her ashes into Oregon’s Rogue River without permission, the scofflaw. Our late pets’ ashes are buried under trees on the land where they died. MrsRico’s parents’ ashes are under a tree at their old home. I expect my own ashes to be left in a coat pocket and lost during dry-cleaning, or mixed with dog food and returned to the soil indirectly. Whatever.

Well, Steve Goodman in Chicago? I can see the Cubbies being okay with that.
