thanx for starting this Bo…I new nothing about Rodriguez until I saw the movie, last night, I rented it for $1.30 @ Redbox…I didnt really feel like watching it, but the GF wanted to…sooooo…
through the first part…i was thinking, "so sad, another Nick Drake, gifted artist who kils himself’ kind of this poor miscast construction worker, either homeless or messed up (I know thats somewhat my take on how the movie was unfolding)…as the movie went on, I was pretty surprised I had NEVER
even heard of him in the US, and I like to think I get around a bit, musically…so as the movie went, and finding out how popular he was In South Africa, it was nice…I thought, “well his music found a home”…I was not prepared to see him found alive, happy and well…so that was really a nice conclusion.
Rodriquez’s strengths seem to lie is his lyrics, political or otherwise (he called those “boy/girl songs” although I do like some of the simple surf type songs…(funny that the SoCal beach culture didnt find him 20 years ago, seems like a great fit:D)
I’ve been watching him discuss our broken political system…he said, regrding the current stasis in congress… to paraphrase…“if its broken it should be fixed”
Nothing like a construction worker for simple solutions!!! (I am a handyman)…
The other folks interviewed were also quite interesting, the philosopher bricklayer as mentioned…and his daughters as well.
Perhaps with Sexto Rodriguez’s new fame, he might try to run again for Mayor of Detroit. Certainly has some hands on experience with renovations and second acts.
