At one time, people practically did. In the 1940s (I don’t know when automakers decided to work on the problem, Tucker tackled it, but, of course, never got to put his cars on the road in large numbers), peope were often speared by the steering column in wrecks. This was at a time when “drive at your own risk” was the law (i.e. you can go really, really fast if you want to and you’re the only one on the road).
