There were comparisons between Quayle’s and Robert Redford’s appearances, prompting Redford to greet a Democratic campaign crowd, “Good evening. I’m Dan Quayle”.
Comedian Elaine Boozler joked that by choosing a running mate even more conservative than Bush on women’s issues, Republicans were treating women voters like “bowling alley waitresses—‘Yeah, he treats me bad, but he’s so damn good-lookin’, I can’t help but love him’”.
And he’s the person for whom King County, Washington (where Seattle is and where I live) was named! (In 2005, the county charter was officially amended to change the namesake to MLK Jr.)
Maybe I’m misunderstanding your point. The Bentsen remark was during the 1988 campaign.
But that actually reinforces my point: if Quayle’s youth and inexperience was a factor, it wasn’t enough to prevent Bush from getting elected in 1988. Ergo, the choice of Quayle as a VP pick wasn’t a huge detriment in that campaign.
I know it’s fun to pick on the current incumbent and “obnoxious” is purely subjective, but she’s been quite an active (and, depending on your metric, effective) VP, especially compared to a lot of her predecessors. She’s not out in front on much apart from her Senate role, but then apart from Dick Cheney very few VPs were.
Based on 128 days in office. It’s true John Tyler, Andrew Johnson, and Harry Truman had already become President by then, but Harris has lapped William R. King almost three times!
