A dude’s college room mate set up a video camera with a remote feed to another room so he could secretly record him having sex with another male student and send the video all over the internet. I’m sure he thought it was hilarious. The dude ended up jumping off of the George Washington Bridge in NYC. Good fun. Perhaps the guy really really really REALLY didn’t want his sexuality broadcast to the world? I’ll take the bait. Recording the sex was a dick move, but falls within the typical realm of college assholery. That it caused the guy to commit was an entirely unintended consequence on their end. (He did, after all, tell the roommate to leave the room for several hours while he had gay sex - thus it’s not like the two recorders had reason to think he was so deeply closeted.) ---

Charge the two students with video voyeurism (or whatever the offence is in NJ for sextaping someone without their knowledge). Expell both of them from the university (does the reason get noted on their transcript?), let the parents of the guy who killed himself decide on whether they want to pursue a civil suit. I wonder how old the other guy on tape was? If he was 17 (not uncommon for a freshman) then those two could be facing child pornography charges and a lifetime of sex offender registration. ---

Just to make an argument: gay or not, the idea of having something that private on the internet would be pretty distressing for a lot of people. and for the ‘what is wrong with kids today’ part: how is it possible that an 18 year old did this to his roommate? This seems like something a 12 year old would do. ---

I know personally if someone published even non-sexual nude photos of me to the Internet I would be very embarrassed and upset. I never even take any nude photos of myself because it would be such a horrible thing for me that I don’t even want to risk it. If someone published a video of something that is supposed to be private, like having sex, regardless of who it was with, I would be far from pleased. ---

To make matters worse, the video not only exposed the guy’s private life, it exposed his sexuality. For that young man, this was mortifying. He might not have even told his family. ---

Is there really a rule at some colleges that if your roommate commits suicide, you get straight A’s for that year? If there is, I assume it won’t be used in this case. ---

I don’t really get attitudes like this. Being in college makes it okay to be a dick? I’ve heard people say stuff like this about drinking, too. I get that people sometimes are assholes, but writing it off as “People just act this way in college” seems pointless. Either it’s okay or not but just because it’s typical doesn’t mean anything. ---
