Sounds just like casino blackjack.
I love the voice to tell me “There’s something left in your cart” the red light pops on. Someone is supposed to come scan their ID and clear you. 90% of the time I don’t wait around for floor person to come over. I load my bags and roll on.
I don’t be hoochin’ crap at Walmart. They wanna chase me down for a run through, go for it.
probably using the latest tech, RFID tags instead of barcodes
Aren’t RFID tags pretty expensive to use on every item in a convenience store?
I was at a Dollar Tree recently and a clerk made an announcement on the P.A. for “Associates perform security scan all aisles”, even if it was a bluff I can’t imagine caring THAT much about somebody shoplifting $1 items.
We’re not allowed to run after you.
Store security is, however, allowed to contact the police and get a warrant for your arrest if you are deemed annoying enough. You’re probably not considered worth chasing.
Sam beaming as he looks down from his cloud, “That’s my home town girl!”
Kind of related but definitely amusing. She was caught skip scanning, which means only scanning some of the items, on a few occasions.
They got her at only $700 which typically falls below the $1000 for a felony charge.
I worked at Home Depot with a guy who was putting expensive tools and such in his bag and then returning them at other Hope Depot’s for cash. They arrested him at just over $1000 worth.
A couple years before (in 2010) I also worked at Wal-mart and was very impressed by the camera tech those guys had. I worked in the electronics department where most video game stuff was locked in a case yet there was enough on the shelf to take to the shoe department where clearly it was a lot easier to open the stuff up and pocket it without being detected. We would get $100’s worth of empty packages back to record as “shrinkage”
I would be happy with just the fries.
I once caught a contractor doing that very thing; took the UPC off a bundle of expensive wood flooring, and substituted it with the UPC of a cheaper one. I merely took the original UPC up to the cashier, smiled at the customer, and told him that the tag had fallen off.
So yes, people very much do do that.
I don’t shop at Dollar Tree very often, but when I do I usually only see one employee. The most I’ve ever seen at once was two.
