> I suppose the association of horses with the aristocracy is inevitable on your side of the Atlantic. That’s not the case over here–horses might be expensive but they aren’t automatically posh, any more than an expensive pickup truck would be.

I don’t like drivers of pick up trucks either, actually. Especially Mitsubishis. But that’s for another thread.

Horses are, in fact, inherently posh. They are much less efficient and more trouble than bicycles, but much more expensive. There are, effectively, just spending money for the sake of spending money, and to make yourself look posh. Hence, they are inherently posh.

> No, the right of way is not exclusively theirs and I didn’t claim it was. I’m just saying they have the right to use the path just as the OP does. They aren’t being inconsiderate when their horses decide to take a dump, and I believe the OP is being faintly ridiculous and amusingly delicate about the whole thing.

It’s not a bridleway I’m talking about, where the surface will be dirt and, when wet, mud. Horse shit on a dirt-path bridleway I wouldn’t have as much trouble with, although I wouldn’t be pleased to happen upon a huge pile of it. It’s the paved National Cycle Network paths I’m complaining about.

I’d write a letter to my MP, but he’s a Tory. In fact, he’s such a Tory they kicked him out of the party for being corrupt.

Are horses allowed to use the paved National Cycle Network paths?

Yes, in certain circumstances.

> The NCN has been a Sustrans project since 1995 and is now over 13,000 miles long. The Network is not formally designated as part of the highway network, although it does in places coincide with minor highways, and Sustrans receives no core funding from Central Government for its maintenance. Rather it is delivered through a variety of legal arrangements dependent upon the
> particular route it follows at any given location and is made up of a mixture of types of route including quiet roads, greenways from converted former railways, canal towpaths, paths across private land of all sorts, paths through public parkland/ open space, as well as public highways and no doubt other ways and paths.
>
> Horses will of course automatically have access to nearly all of the Network which is on the public highway, generally quiet roads, restricted byways or bridleways. However where the Network runs over land that is not in Sustrans ownership and does not include a right of way for equestrians, then the landowner will determine whether horses may use the path. The Network includes a significant number of permissive paths and some of these explicitly exclude horses from using the route. In these circumstances horses would not be able to use the route irrespective of its design and construction.

This. Our group is always at the back and we have a garden tractor w/trailer and two pooper scoopers that go behind the horses. You would not believe the number of people who walk up asking for the droppings for their gardens. We’ve never had to haul it home.
