Selfie Stick user, stick it up yourself!

I can get behind complaints about stick-wielding in public places. Having a camera attached to it does not make it not a stick. You can put someone’s eye out with one of those.

My personal hobbyhorse is not labeling photos. In the last three years, I’ve inherited photos from both sides of the family. You’d think that if they were important enough to take up space for 4 generations, that someone would have labeled them all.

I agree with Manda JO and Miller. Some day someone will be dealing with your photos. Vacation photos with nobody in them will be deleted, if digital, or tossed, if physical. So will post cards bought for the view, or for the joke, and never sent to anyone. That’s just the way it is. You have been warned.

Considering the effort that Disney World has gone to to supply identified nooks with good photo backgrounds, some of them with helpers to take your picture, there’s just no reason to cause obstructions for a picture. Which goes back to don’t be a jerk with a stick. Hanging a camera on the end does not give you dispensation to be a jerk with a stick. And if you’re being a jerk with a stick at Disney World, you have no excuse at all.

(Why am I thinking that if you gave the jerks camera scissors, they’d run with them?)

Had to bump this, looks like my measured and reasonable objection to arseholes with selfie sticks has been heard where it matters.

I’m not saying my rant was singularly instrumental in triggering these policies, I can’t make that claim, but is it a coincidence that a scant few months after my thread we suddenly see these rightfully draconian measured put in place? I think not.

So this is all good, I’m going to hang out in the Impressionist section of the National Gallery on the off-chance of seeing a group of selfie-stick wielding group of Spanish students being wrestled to the ground and tasered.

I ask of the good dopers, where have you heard of selfie-stick bans being enforced and what would be a just punishment for transgression?

Those are all museums. From previous posts in this thread, sounds like certain narrow walkways at tourist sites that are also real thoroughfares – e.g., London’s Tower Bridge – would be next.

Is there already a standard sign logo to convey “no selfie sticks”?

We did the Cheech & Chong/War concert at Foxwoods a couple weeks back. Some guys a few rows ahead of us [we were in row 108] stood up and did the selfie crouch and took a selfie of them with the phone aimed back at the stage - complete with flash. I would seriously doubt the quality of the selfie … though if the guys had wanted to spend $130 [I think] each they could have gone to a meet and greet and got up close pictures with Cheech and Chong [though I have to admit, I would have loved pictures with Lonnie Jordan of War …]

Heh, it was pretty funny that GERMAN was the replacement ethnicity mentioned. Even more tone deaf!
