Damn. The handwriting is on the wall for this one. Sad that the Senate can’t read it. I think the case from California is on appeal to the 9th Circuit, and then probably to SCOTUS. DADT ain’t dead yet, but it is time to pull the plug on its life support.

Disgraceful is right. Disgusting is the “disg” word I want to use. For all the talk about “doing what’s right for the armed forces,” the basic party split on this issue in the face of the recent report basically finding that the DADT repeal would likely not have a negative impact on the armed forces shows, IMO, that all those who voted against this repeal are pathetic homophobes, or pathetically beholden to their homophobic constituancies.

Or more simply that they oppose it simply because the Democrats want it, which is no less disgusting.

The bill would pass with a majority vote, but Republicans won’t let it come up for a vote.
Perhaps there’s not a big enough taxcut in the bill to buy their votes?

Well, Brown’s said, at least, that he’ll support it after the tax cuts pass. Collins and Manchin, I’m not so sure. So it’s possible this isn’t dead yet, if the Democrats can get Manchin back in line and find some way to make Collins happy.

Murkowski’s also said she’s willing to vote for it. Supposedly, Collins and Lieberman are planning to introduce legislation to repeal DADT as a stand alone bill, rather than as part of the Defense Authorization Bill. This would also need to pass the House, which shouldn’t be a problem as far as the number of votes goes, but could get difficult given the time frame.
Also, I’ve gotten pretty skeptical over whether Harry Reid actually wants this to pass, or whether he just wants to be able to blame the Republicans for its failure. The primary problem seems to be that the Senate is simply not a functional legislative body. We’re not as bad as the Sejm of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, whose _[liberum veto](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberum_veto)_ nearly ruined the country in the 17th and 18th centuries, but this is no rational way to run a government.

For many playing to their base is the job. It does not matter if it is bigotry. it does not matter if it is wrong. It is about polling. If a majority of his constituents wants him to hold a stance and he believes his election is dependent upon it, then he will hold it.

The no vote won. In the senate it is weird. there were 57 for, 40 against. The against vote wins.
