Senate candidate lies about service in Vietnam.

[QUOTE=Dio]
Even more than that, it bothered me that he allowed his attack dogs to smear genuine Vietnam vets (Kerry, Cleland) to win elections.

McCain too, for that matter (though not over his service).

ETA: Post 77 should say Jack Kemp.

Jack Kemp.

Also don’t forget Dick Cheney saying he “had other priorities.”

Why didn’t everybody just say that to their draft board?

I got it. I get it. Bush is OKAY. The explaination sucks.

ITS A FUCKING JOKE. So, you have a handful of retards (including me apparently) arguing over a joke.

At least I have the sense to know I am a retard for wrestling with pigs. The other pigs think they are proving something. What I dont know…

Time management was a new concept in 1969.

Okay. Can I stay pissed off, though?

I would argue that this is an offense far worse than falsely inflating one’s own military record. The latter dilutes the heroism of genuine war veterans; the former outright attacks it and declares it to be contemptible. It’s like the difference between a loudmouth at a bar spinning tall tales about his service record on the one hand, versus someone spewing Der Trihs-style anti-soldier rhetoric on the other.

We have been through this. My grandfather was kept out of WWII by a previously unknown heart murmur. When this was discovered doctors by no means told him to go home and wait to die, and he continued an active outdoors lifestyle until he died nearly fifty years later.

It is possible to have a condition disqualifying to the military but not the NFL. Or high school football. Or ski vacations. Or hunting trips.

THANK YOU! Someone who reads for comprehension! billfish678, you need to settle down and actually read the words before you start flinging shit.

eta: oh, and I’m a she

It was extremely common for professional athletes to have such conditions during Vietnam. Astonishing coincidence.

And for the uppitiest, like Muhammad Ali, to get drafted.

The one that caught my eye was: *remember the Dem motto: "Character ? that don’t mean ***."

In this case, of course, ‘***’ translates roughly to: ‘shit when balanced against putting a Republican in office.’

And the denials begin:

I don’t know what’s worse, the denial, or the fact that he had the nerve to make it at a VFW hall.

Hmm. I don’t know that that is so - it seems to me that athletes would go the common route of seeking normal deferments or placement in reserve units. That seems much easier to handle.

Good point from the article joebuck quoted:

They were from the Harvard swim team. Instead, he served as a lifeguard at Camp Granada.

I think at this point it’s up to the voters of Connecticut. Lying about your past is not a criminal offense and the truth is now out there. If Nutmeggers decide they still want Blumenthal as their Senator, they can choose him.

How many other times has Blumenthal claimed to be a combat veteran? I can’t find any.

But I can find instances of Bush exaggerating his military service in other ways that most of us would call ‘lies.’

Actually, though it likely won’t be prosecuted, lying about being a Vietnam veteran for the purpose of seeking election is indeed a criminal offense. See the Stolen Valor Act of 2005.

I did, just out of curiosity. It’s only about medals.

That took only a few seconds, time that you could have spent yourself.

I believe that act refers to claims to have been in the military when you weren’t and/or wearing military decorations that you haven’t earned. I don’t believe Blumenthal is accused of either.
