Our government does plenty of things to people. It licenses them to drive and permits them to practice law. It imprisons them when they are found to have violated the criminal code.
Which of those are objectively issues of public morality, and why?
All of them are questions of public morality to the extent they have any moral aspect or relevance at all; which this one clearly does.
